Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Ci eravamo lasciati con il mio post di first impression (lo trovate qui). L'impressione era stata ottima, il prosieguo lo è stato ancora di più.
Mi dissocio da chi l'ha definita un capolavoro.
Non lo è.
Slow Horses è una serie egregia che ha saputo combinare tanti aspetti sempre rilevanti, dalla regia, al casting, al ritmo, allo sviluppo dei singoli personaggi e delle singole storyline, ma senza mai raggiungere quel grado massimo di credibilità che ci si attenderebbe da un caposaldo della serialità o del genere.
Certo è che, gli orfani di The Americans ed Homeland, avranno gioito nel vedere finalmente qualcosa che ricordasse quei 2 (in questo caso si) capolavori.
Slow Horses si è insediata in quella fenditura dorata, fatta di inseguimenti, sotterfugi, agnelli sacrificali, giochi di potere, intelligence e turbamenti etici, e lo ha fatto in maniera sopraffina, forte anche della presenza di un gigante come Gary Oldman.
Ed è lui che si attesta come il nocciolo di un reattore nucleare pronto a saltare in aria.
Proprio nel finale, infatti, scopriamo qualcosa del suo passato che, immaginiamo, tornerà a perseguitarlo nella seconda stagione. Quel qualcosa chiude la prima stagione e riannoderà i fili della seconda stagione, già sponsorizzata da un ricco ed intenso trailer distribuito da Apple TV Plus.
Il season finale ha chiuso i conti con i Sons of Albion ed il rapimento di cui i neonazisti britannici erano stati artefici. I nodi sono venuti al pettine ma tutti, all'MI6/5 sono riusciti a salvare le apparenze. Le schegge impazzite capitanate da Lamb hanno scompaginato le carte ma non sono riusciti a far saltare il banco.
I "buoni" hanno prevalso, ma dentro le tenebre nessuno ha veramente pagato le conseguenze.

Gli eventi del finale sono stati drammatici e autoconclusivi ma non hanno lasciato quella sensazione di immortalità che altre volte, in altre serie, abbiamo pregustato. Non ci sono state le sorprese che attendavamo (se non nella sequenza finale) e non ci sono stati colpi di coda magistrali.
Tutto è filato liscio, quasi a voler preparare il terreno per qualcosa di cataclismatico che potremo vedere nella stagione successiva.
Poco male.
Slow Horses non ha deluso. Ha fatto il suo, e molto di più, e soprattutto ha lasciato allo spettatore una gran voglia di continuare il percorso.
Non un cattivo risultato per una serie che doveva dimostrare di valere il costo del biglietto e che aveva paragoni importanti alle spalle.

Still a very good Apple TV series?

Gary Oldman spectacular?

Finally a level-headed spy-thriller?

Slow Horses ended its short run a few weeks ago and did so by immediately relaunching into a second season that promises to be even richer, even more explosive, even denser.
And it is perhaps this last adjective that set it apart in this debut.
Six very well-calibrated episodes where there was no room for unnecessary long-windedness and filler made Apple's series a very worthy heir, in my view, to Homeland.
Gary Oldman led a cast that I found to be in great shape.
Everything in its place.
Perhaps even too much so.
An ending that did not disappoint but probably also did not excite as expected.
Let us analyze it very fleetingly to celebrate this much needed show.

We had left off with my first impression post (you can find it here). The impression had been great, the continuation even more so.
I dissociate myself from those who called it a masterpiece.
It isn't.
Slow Horses is an egregious series that has managed to combine so many consistently relevant aspects, from directing, to casting, to pacing, to the development of individual characters and storylines, but without ever achieving the highest degree of credibility one would expect from a staple of seriality or the genre.
Certainly, the orphans of The Americans and Homeland will have rejoiced to finally see something reminiscent of those 2 (in this case yes) masterpieces.
Slow Horses has settled into that golden crevice of chases, subterfuge, sacrificial lambs, power plays, intelligence, and ethical upheaval, and it has done so in an over-the-top manner, bolstered in part by the presence of a giant like Gary Oldman.
And it is he who is attested as the core of a nuclear reactor ready to blow up.
In the very finale, in fact, we discover something about his past that, we imagine, will come back to haunt him in the second season. That something closes the first season and will tie up the threads of the second season, already sponsored by a rich and intense trailer distributed by Apple TV Plus.
The season finale closed the books on the Sons of Albion and the kidnapping that the British neo-Nazis had masterminded. The knots came to a head but everyone at MI6/5 managed to keep up appearances. The mad shrapnel led by Lamb upset the cards but failed to break the bank.
The "good guys" prevailed, but inside the darkness no one really paid the price.

The events of the finale were dramatic and self-contained, but they did not leave the feeling of immortality that at other times, in other series, we have been anticipating. There were none of the surprises we expected (except in the final sequence) and there were no masterful plot twists.
Everything went smoothly, as if to set the stage for something cataclysmic that we may see in the following season.
Not too bad.
Slow Horses did not disappoint. It did its own thing, and much more, and above all it left the viewer with a great desire to continue the journey.
Not a bad result for a series that had to prove it was worth the cost of the ticket and had important comparisons behind it.
Trailers, especially in recent years, have often been harbingers of great expectations never confirmed upon viewing the film or series that is the subject of the trailer. Children of our time, we are doomed to disappointment. In this case, however, I feel I am expressing, in addition to hype, great hope in the second season. The first vintage seemed to me, intentionally, an appetizer.
The second looks like it could be the main course.
In the meantime, let's enjoy these first 6 episodes and draw a more than positive balance, thanks to yet another winning bet by the Cupertino-based company.
