Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Sto andando in fissa con l'Australia? Potrebbe sembrare cosi visto che sono già alla seconda recensione di una serie australiana.
Cosi non è tranquilli.
E' solo un caso.
Dopo Wolfe like me vi porto in un reparto psichiatrico.

Perchè vedere Wakefield?
Perchè non vederlo?
Me lo sono chiesto continuamente, anche durante la visione del pilot e di un paio di episodi successivi.
Alla fine, avendo scelto di abbandonarlo, credo di aver messo sulla bilancia pro e contro e di aver decretato che in giro c'è di meglio, molto di meglio, nonostante la serie australiana abbia tutte le carte in regola per essere omaggiata di qualche ora del nostro tempo.
Ed ecco che subito arriva il primo punto a sfavore dello show.
Il tempo.
A fronte di un'offerta seriale cosi magnificente come quella che abbiamo in questo periodo, quanto può essere "fruttuoso" un investimento di 8 ore in Wakefield?
Nello stesso tempo potreste recuperare le 3 stagioni di After Life, guardare una stagione e mezza de L'Amica Geniale, affondare gli artigli in Watchmen o in American Crime Story, tanto per fare qualche esempio.
Se devo comprare un biglietto per l'Australia e volare sin lì vorrei che il motivo sia più che valido. Lo sforzo richiesto da Wakefield deve valere il prezzo del biglietto. Non posso sperare in una serie buona ma devo cercare una serie ottima.
E quindi la sentenza, la mia personale sentenza, è che quelle 8 ore non valgono il prezzo del biglietto. Wakefield è un buon prodotto, veramente buono ma non è un prodotto di eccellenza, ergo, dopo avergli dato uno sguardo, meglio metterlo da parte, scrivere una simil recensione e andare avanti.
Ma di cosa tratta, esattamente, questo show?
E' una storia corale, ambientata all'interno di un reparto psichiatrico dove il protagonista, Nik, si prodiga incessantemente per provare a recuperare la mente e la vita di persone fragili e/o disturbate. Dalla donna vittima di abusi, all'uomo d'affari schiavo del lavoro, dal depresso, allo schizofrenico, dal malato immaginario al ragazzo che si crede invisibile. Le atmosfere sono di quelle alla "Qualcuno volò sul nido del cuculo", più attualizzate ed ovviamente meno iconiche.
Nik è il collante fra i pazienti ed i dipendenti, gli infermieri della casa di cura. E' lui a metterci la faccia, a metterci il cuore, a provare ad andare oltre la burocrazia.
Questo suo essere e sentire il proprio ruolo come una vocazione lo porta a vivere profondamente quella realtà, esponendosi a tutto il peso che ciò comporta o potrebbe comportare.
Il tema è bello, e fondamentalmente ci porta verso quella che è diventata sempre più una piaga dei nostri tempi. L'insofferenza al mondo che corre. L'incapacità di adattarci. L'alzare l'asticella costantemente. Il non godersi la vita. Tutte queste assunzioni portano ad un unica conseguenza: il crollo psicologico, in tutte le sue forme.

As usual today I bring you a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see in the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for some months now, I have decided to give you constantly, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org.

Am I going on a fixation with Australia? It might seem so since I'm already on my second review of an Australian series.
That's not the case.
It's just a case.
After Wolfe like me I take you to a psychiatric ward.

Why see Wakefield?
Why not see it?
I asked myself that question constantly, even while watching the pilot and a couple of subsequent episodes.
In the end, having chosen to abandon it, I think I put the pros and cons on the scales and decreed that there is better, much better, out there, despite the fact that the Australian series has all the makings of a tribute to a few hours of our time.
And here immediately comes the first point against the show.
Time.
In the face of a serial offer as magnificent as the one we have in this period, how much can be "fruitful" an investment of 8 hours in Wakefield?
In the same amount of time you could catch up on 3 seasons of After Life, watch a season and a half of The Genius Girl, sink your claws into Watchmen or American Crime Story, just to name a few.
If I'm going to buy a ticket to Australia and fly all the way there, I'd like the reason to be more than valid. The effort required by Wakefield has to be worth the price of the ticket. I can't hope for a good series, but I have to look for a very good series.
And so the judgment, my personal judgment, is that those 8 hours are not worth the price of the ticket. Wakefield is a good product, really good, but it's not a product of excellence, ergo, after taking a look at it, best to put it aside, write a mock review and move on.
But what, exactly, is this show about?
It's a choral story set within a psychiatric ward where the main character, Nik, works tirelessly to try and restore the minds and lives of fragile and/or disturbed people. From the abused woman, to the businessman enslaved to his job, from the depressed to the schizophrenic, from the imaginary sick person to the boy who thinks he is invisible. The atmospheres are of those of "Someone flew over the cuckoo's nest", more updated and obviously less iconic.
Nik is the glue between the patients and the employees, the nurses of the nursing home. He's the one who puts his face on it, puts his heart into it, and tries to go beyond bureaucracy.
This being and feeling his role as a vocation leads him to live deeply that reality, exposing himself to all the weight that this entails or could entail.
The theme is a beautiful one, and basically leads us towards what has increasingly become a plague of our times. Impatience with the fast paced world. The inability to adapt. The constant raising of the bar. The failure to enjoy life. All these assumptions lead to a single consequence: the psychological collapse, in all its forms.
