Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.
Troppe le produzioni capaci di dire qualcosa di importante, di sperimentare, di fidelizzare con lo spettatore. Troppe le commistioni fra i generi, le serie tv di livello altissimo per permetterci di ignorare questo oramai conclamato sorpasso del medium televisivo nei confronti del grande schermo.
E cosi capita che, nello stesso giorno, in data 24 Maggio 2022, si possa assistere, comodamente rilassati sul proprio divano, a 2 episodi storici, diversissimi fra loro, e difficilmente cancellabili dalla nostra memoria.
A stretto giro di orologio, infatti, ho avuto la fortuna di sintonizzarmi prima sul penultimo episodio della storia di This Is Us, dal titolo The Train, e poi sull'oramai iconico mid-season finale della stagione conclusiva di Better Call Saul, dal titolo Plan & Execute.
Il fatto che ha suscitare cosi tante vibrazioni positive siano 2 serie arrivate al culmine della loro corsa, entrambe con il raggiungimento della sesta stagione, la dice lunga su quanto duratura sia nel tempo la qualità che le migliori serie su piazze riescano ad offrire.
Come dicevo, This Is Us- e Better Call Saul sono 2 show che viaggiano su binari separati.
La prima ha sempre giocato fortissimo sulle emozioni, sui sentimenti, sul quotidiano.
Better Call Saul è invece una serie magistrale sotto tutti i punti di vista, da quello tecnico a quello narrativo, con un abilità nel costruire storyline e personaggi che forse solo Breaking Bad (serie di cui è lo spinoff) è riuscita a raggiungere. Il diavolo sta nei dettaglio e Better Call Saul, sotto questo aspetto, rappresenta il diavolo in persona.
Il mid-season finale ha fatto convergere i destini di quasi tutti i personaggi dello show e lo ha fatto con una maestria che francamente lascia a bocca aperta. Tutti ricorderemo quella sequenza finale ma nessuno dimenticherà, neppure, tutto quello che è successo nei 45 minuti precedenti. Tutto è stato impeccabile e nulla, ma proprio nulla è parso fuori posto. Anche l'atteso ha finito per essere sorprendente. Anche il sorprendente è finito per sembrare naturalissimo nella sua messa in scena.
Dopo la visione della fiamma di quella candela e tutto ciò che accadeva intorno ad essa, nulla sarà più come prima. Il peccato di Better Call Saul è che alza talmente tanto l'asticella da far sembrare piatte tutte le altre serie, senza voler parlare di quanto faccia sembrare banali il 99% dei film su piazza.

Seriality gives, or at least can give, joys that no film can now offer.
The thrill we experience sitting between the red seats of a movie theater is a priceless feeling that nothing and no one can ever depress.
Remaining seated in the warmth and comfort of one's abode, in bed or on the sofa in one's living room, offers different sensations, certainly less impactful than a movie theater.
In essence, however, the thrills that TV has been providing in recent years are unparalleled. Cinema must surrender to the ability of TV productions to capture the attention of their audience and win their hearts.
The superiority of TV over cinema is no longer in question, in my opinion.
Too many productions are capable of saying something important, of experimenting, of building loyalty with the viewer. Too many intermingling of genres, TV series of the highest level to allow us to ignore this now-confirmed overtaking of the TV medium over the big screen.
And so it happens that on the same day, on May 24, 2022, we can watch, comfortably relaxed on our couch, 2 historical episodes, very different from each other, and difficult to erase from our memory.
In fact, close to the clock, I was lucky enough to tune in first to the penultimate episode of the history of This Is Us, titled The Train, and then to the now iconic mid-season finale of the final season of Better Call Saul, titled Plan & Execute.
The fact that it has stirred up so many positive vibes are 2 series that have reached the apex of their run, both reaching their sixth season, speaks volumes about how enduring the quality that the best series on squares can offer.
As I said, This Is Us- and Better Call Saul are 2 shows that travel on separate tracks.
The former has always played very strongly on emotions, feelings, and the everyday.
Better Call Saul, on the other hand, is a masterful series in all respects, from the technical to the narrative, with a skill in building storylines and characters that perhaps only Breaking Bad (a series of which it is the spinoff) has managed to achieve. The devil is in the details, and Better Call Saul, in this respect, represents the devil himself.
The mid-season finale converged the fates of almost every character on the show and did so with a mastery that is frankly jaw-dropping. We will all remember that final sequence but no one will forget, either, everything that happened in the preceding 45 minutes. Everything was flawless and nothing, but absolutely nothing seemed out of place. Even the expected ended up being surprising. Even the surprising ended up seeming most natural in its staging.
After the vision of that candle flame and all that was happening around it, nothing will ever be the same again. The sin of Better Call Saul is that it raises the bar so high that it makes all the other series seem flat, not to mention how trivial it makes 99% of the movies on the square seem.
Preceding that candle and the fates of Howard, Saul, Kim and the others, there had been, for me the train, the last train taken by Rebecca Pearson.
Once again the parallel with Six Feet Under seemed natural and inevitable. Once again the heart was shattered and the tear glands were put to a very hard test. Once again, everyone's life took on very human and sublime connotations that became apparent, reflexively, to the vision of all that Dan Fogelman was telling us.
Such an evening repays so many horrible pilots seen over the years, so many disappointed expectations, and so many hours spent in front of the TV. The great thing is that, despite such an unrepeatable evening, the feeling you are left with is that more such evenings may happen in the future.
The magic of TV. The spell of seriality is destined never to break.
