Before reaching the electric chair, those sentenced to death walked along a long corridor whose floor was green, also known as the Green Mile. The heartwarming story of Paul Edgecombe, a former death row guard, and inmate John Coffey, a big muscular, soft-hearted man sentenced to death for a double infanticide, but in reality not guilty, having been deceived and being very naive as to fail to prove otherwise.
The plot of the film denounces a practice that is still present today, cases of death row inmates without being certain of the crime and without any possibility of defending themselves, passively undergoing a lethal decision. Taken from the book by Stephen King, the last days before the sentence are narrated, describing the feelings that a condemned man feels, the reactions of the people around him, the harassment received by the other inmates. A story that made me grow a great anger. To think that sometimes we judge people without knowing them, the hypocrisy of a society that leaves no room for justifications when the sentence is passed.
Thomas Newman's magical soundtrack affects all the scenes of the film and establishes to create that feeling of internal malaise that takes you after you finish watching the film. The notes are delicate and touch your heart. Very long film about 3 hours but the intensity is such that you can see it without noticing the time that passes. There is a streak of science fiction in the plot that does not spoil the content, rather it helps to enhance the power of the message.
I do not recommend viewing for children because unfortunately there are bloody scenes, we are still talking about death row, and if we add to this also the presence of an electric chair, it is understandable why it is better not to see this film in the company of smaller. It is a film to watch, even for those who are not fond of the genre. In this story, Stephen King's brilliant pen was truly impressive.

I condannati a morte, prima di raggiungere la sedia elettrica, percorrevano un lungo corridoio il cui pavimento era di colore verde, detto anche il Miglio Verde. E' un film drammatico in cui si descrive le condizioni delle carceri negli USA negli anni prima della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, e dove la condanna a morte veniva eseguita da una scarica elettrica intensa e violenta che dal capo attraversava tutto il corpo, uccidendo il detenuto non senza lancinanti sofferenze. Pratica assolutamente crudele che è stata successivamente abolita.
La commovente storia di Paul Edgecombe, ex guardia nel braccio della morte, e del detenuto John Coffey, un grosso uomo muscoloso, dal cuore tenero, condannato a morte per un duplice infanticidio, ma nella realtà non colpevole, essendo stato ingannato ed essendo lui molto ingenuo da non riuscire a dimostrare il contrario.
La trama del film denuncia una pratica tutt'oggi ancora presente, casi di condannati a morte senza aver la certezza del reato e senza alcuna possibilità di difendersi, subendo passivamente una decisione letale. Tratto dal libro di Stephen King, si narrano gli ultimi giorni prima della condanna, descrivendo le sensazioni che un condannato a morte prova, le reazioni della gente che vi è attorno, le vessazioni ricevuti da parte degli altri detenuti. Una storia che mi ha fatto crescere una gran rabbia. Pensare che a volte giudichiamo le persone senza conoscerle, l'ipocrisia di una società che non lascia scampo a giustificazioni quando viene lanciata la sentenza.
La magica colonna sonora di Thomas Newman incide in tutte le scene del film e contribuisce a creare quella sensazione di malessere interno che ti prende dopo aver terminato la visione del film. Le note sono delicate e ti toccano il cuore. Film molto lungo circa 3 ore ma l'intensità è tale da vederlo senza accorgersi del tempo che trascorre. Vi è una vena di fantascienza nella trama che non guasta il contenuto, anzi aiuta ad esaltarne la potenza del messaggio.
Non consiglio la visione ai bambini perchè purtroppo ci sono delle scene cruenti, parliamo pur sempre del braccio della morte, e se a questo aggiungiamo anche la presenza di una sedia elettrica, è ben comprensibile il motivo per cui meglio non vedere questo film in compagnia dei più piccoli. E' una pellicola da guardare, anche per chi non è amante del genere, In questo racconto la brillante penna di Stephen King è stata davvero imponente.
