Neon Genesis Evangelion is (still) going to be one of the most popular IPs in all of anime in 25 years because there is simply nothing else like it. End of Evangelion is like Neon Genesis Evangelion turned up to 13. It's weird as fuck and, somehow, not just for shock factor and strangeness for it's own sake. Within the first scene you are going to understand that what you are watching is, to borrow a phrase, "So fucked up".
EVA is everything that a genre takedown should be. In sweeping generalizations NGE was supposed to be a fairly simple subversion of the 'giant fighting robot' where the benevolent inventor is an abusive absentee father, the main character is pathetic, and piloting the robot is deeply traumatic. Then then directors mother died, he got real suicidal, and Evangelion went completely off the rails in the best possible way. Suddenly it becomes clear that humanity is in a war against angels, fighting for their very existence against divinity, committing atrocities, and we are likely about to watch some sort of final ending for humanity.
Before it's final ending Neon Genesis Evangelion evolves (devolves) into some sort of psycho-drama being bisected right in front of us. It's at once confusing as fuck, compelling, deeply touching, stupid as hell, and pretty boring at the same time.
It's not possible to really describe as there is so little like it. Go watch it.
