Chronicles of a Street Photographer, Day 4. / Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Hello, friends of the #blackandwhite community—how are you all doing? For the past few days, I’ve been posting some personal reflections and stories from my photo shoots, sort of like a diary, and I’ve really enjoyed the idea; so much happens on the streets of Havana, especially for a street photographer who has to deal with people and everything around them.

Saludos, amigos de la comunidad #blackandwhite, ¿cómo les va? Desde hace algunos días he estado publicando algunas consideraciones personales, experiencias de mis salidas fotográficas, a modo de crónicas, y la verdad me ha gustado la idea; son muchas las cosas que suceden en las calles de La Habana, y más a un fotógrafo callejero que tiene que lidiar con las personas y todo lo que le rodea.

Just yesterday I was talking to a friend, and she asked me what settings I use on my camera when I’m out on the street. My answer was a bit odd because, honestly, most of the time I don’t even know—I don’t really pay much attention to that.

Ayer precisamente estaba conversando con una amiga, y ella me preguntaba qué parámetros utilizo en la cámara cuando estoy en la calle. Mi respuesta fue un poco rara porque, la verdad, en la mayoría de las ocasiones ni sé, no estoy muy pendiente de eso.

It’s just that everything happens so fast that if I start fiddling with the settings, I’ll miss the shot; there are moments that last only seconds, and I have to be ready for them.

Es que todo sucede tan rápido, que si me pongo a estar cambiando los parámetros, se me va la foto; hay imágenes que duran segundos y tengo que estar listo para ellas.

What do I do? I set the camera to aperture priority mode, adjust the F-stop, and let the camera handle the rest; I don’t know if it’s the best setting, but at least it’s worked for me.

¿Qué hago? Pongo la cámara en modo prioridad de apertura, para ajustar F y que la cámara ponga lo demás; no sé si será la mejor configuración, pero al menos me ha dado resultados.

And that’s how I get by, as we Cubans say—some days are calmer, others more hectic, some are sweltering hot, and others involve very little walking.

Y así voy tirando, como decimos los cubanos, unos días más tranquilos, otros agitados, días de pasar mucho calor y otros de caminar poco.
