I usually do street photography, and sometimes it bothers me a bit because I only capture random moments. I’m not saying it’s bad, but with documentary photography, I want to do more than that. I need to choose a theme and delve into it to find a story to tell.
In the meantime, I had my first studio session.
The experience was pleasant, although I don’t see myself as a studio photographer. Mainly because I don’t like it when models ask for “retouching.”
Regarding beauty, I believe that the more natural, the better. However, I respect the work of great photographers who excel in this type of photography.
In fact, a dear and very talented friend told me that it’s normal for clients to ask for “imperfections” to be removed, and he has no choice because the client is always right.
I respect that, and my way of doing so is by not participating in the construction of an illusion.
Fortunately, I wasn’t asked for retouching, so the session went well and quickly.
The client told me that I direct too much and need to let the poses be more organic.
In my ignorance, I thought that in this type of photography, you always had to direct.
What I love most about documentary photography is that I don’t intervene in the scene. My intervention is the framing, and that is essential to me.
Next time, I will apply this.

Suelo hacer fotografía de calle, y a veces me fastidia un poco porque solo hago fotos del azar. No digo que esté mal, pero con la fotografía documental quiero hacer más que eso. Debo plantearme un tema y ahondar allí para encontrar una historia que pueda contar.
En el entretanto, surgió mi primera sesión de estudio.
La experiencia fue agradable, aunque no me veo como fotógrafo de estudio. Más que todo porque no me agrada que los modelos pidan “retoques”.
Respecto a la belleza, soy partidario que mientras más natural, mejor. Sin embargo, respeto el trabajo de los grandes fotógrafos que hacen vida en este tipo de fotografía.
De hecho, un querido amigo que es muy talentoso, me dijo que es normal que los clientes pidan que les quiten “desperfectos”, y él no tiene otro remedio porque el cliente es quien manda.
Eso lo respeto, y mi manera de hacerlo es no participando en la construcción de una ilusión.
Por suerte no me pidieron retoques, así que la sesión surgió bien, todo rápido.
La clienta me dijo que dirijo mucho y me falta dejar que las poses sean más orgánicas.
Y yo en mi ignorancia pensé que en este tipo de fotografía había que dirigir siempre.
Porque lo que más me gusta de la fotografía documental es que no intervengo en la escena. Mi intervención es el encuadre, y eso es lo esencial para mí.
La próxima vez lo aplicaré.
