Taking photos of people on the streets is always a complicated thing. I particularly have in my favour the fact that I have always lived in this town where I take pictures, so that makes it easier for me to take pictures of those I meet on the streets...

Hacer fotos de personas en las calles es siempre algo complicado. Yo particularmente tengo a favor el hecho de haber vivido siempre en este pueblo en donde hago fotos, entonces eso hace que sea más fácil para mi fotografiar a quienes me encuentro en las calles...

Despite knowing everyone here, I always still have a kind of ‘psychological shock’ when I take pictures of some people. This is especially true when it comes to portraits where the subject is in direct eye contact with my camera lens. I guess in this kind of photography there is a kind of momentary and intimate connection between the subject and the photographer, then somehow they are both reflected in the photo.

A pesar de conocer a todos aquí, siempre sigo teniendo una especie de "choque psicológico" cuando hago fotos de algunas personas. Esto es especialmente cierto cuando se trata de retratos en los que el sujeto está en contacto visual directo con el lente de mi cámara. Supongo que en este tipo de fotografías hay una especie de conexión momentánea e intima entre el sujeto y el fotógrafo, entonces de alguna manera ambos están reflejados en la foto.

Sometimes people are not entirely well and that is something that becomes palpable when you take a portrait of them unexpectedly (my favourite way to do it, by the way)... This is a place where daily life can be difficult for many of the people, so this is something that strikes me when I go through my camera and process these photographs. It is because of this kind of thing that I often say that street photography is a very human activity, very psychological, something that marks us and can transform us as we go through it.

Algunas veces las personas no están del todo bien y eso es algo que se hace palpable cuando se les hace un retrato de manera inesperada (lo que más me gusta hacer por cierto)... Este es un lugar en onde la vida diaria puede ser difícil para muchos de sus habitantes, así que esto es algo que me impacta al momento de revisar mi cámara y procesar estas fotografías. Es por este tipo de cosas que suelo decir que la fotografía callejera es una actividad muy humana, muy psicológica, algo que nos marca y puede transformarnos según lo llevemos a cabo.

Somewhat different from close-up portraits are those photos that I often call ‘stolen’ and that are taken without people realising that they are being photographed. These are less complex photos most of the time, yet they have the kind of eloquence and spontaneity that comes from the effort involved in ‘staying hidden and shooting the photo’ to capture the subject without any posing.

Algo distinto a los retratos cercanos son esas fotos que suelo llamar "robadas" y que son hechas sin que las personas se percaten de que están siendo fotografiadas. Esas son fotos menos complejas casi siempre, sin embargo tienen el tipo de elocuencia y espontaneidad producto de ese esfuerzo que implica "mantenerse oculto y disparar la foto" para capturar al sujeto sin pose alguna.

_{ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.}
