Sixty years ago, East Montalbán was little more than large plots of land, some houses of foreign families who arrived during the post-war period and the building where the recently inaugurated secondary school was located, which caused a great stir among the local people, because now their children could continue studying near their homes without having to go and live in Valencia, the capital city of our state.

Sesenta años atrás, el Este de Montalbán era poco más que grandes lotes de terrenos, algunas casas de familias extranjeras llegadas durante la post-guerra y la el edificio en donde funcionaba la recién inaugurada secundaria que causó gran revuelo entre las personas del lugar, pues ahora sus hijos al salir de la escuela podían seguir estudiando cerca de sus casas sin necesidad de irse a vivir a Valencia, la ciudad capital de nuestro estado.

Over the years the town centre began to expand and the once empty lots in the east became blocks of streets in which new houses and municipal buildings appeared, such as the cultural centre, the new police station, an outpatient clinic and sports fields.... A number of small, repetitive-looking housing estates were also built, all of which differed greatly from the ‘old town’ appearance of the streets closer to the village centre...

Con el paso de los años el casco urbano del pueblo comenzó a expandirse y los otrora terrenos baldíos del Este se fueron convirtiendo en manzanas de calles en las cuales aparecieron nuevas casas y dependencias municipales como el ateneo cultural, el nuevo cuartel de la policía, un ambulatorio y canchas deportivas... También se construyeron algunas urbanizaciones de casa pequeñas y de aspecto repetido, todo lo cual difería mucho del aspecto de "pueblo antiguo" de las calles más cercanas al centro pueblo...

The old cemetery was also there to the east before the arrival of the new streets and houses... It is curious that being a not very big place, it still has ‘available’ more than half of its space to bury the dead people, as this has been the municipal cemetery since the years of consolidation of the village (about 190 years ago)... My father (a joker without limits) used to say things like: ‘In Montalbán people don't die and those who do die are buried standing up so as not to take up space’ :) ... But I don't think that's really the case... The truth is that there is plenty of space in the cemetery and many people (like me for sure) have already bought a space there, which are very cheap because they belong to the municipality... So when I take pictures there, I'm practically photographing my future neighbourhood! hahaha :))

El viejo cementerio también estaba allí al Este antes de la llegada de las nuevas calles y casas... Resulta curioso que siendo un lugar no muy grande, aún tenga "disponible" más de la mitad de su espacio para enterrar a los muertos, pues este ha sido el cementerio municipal desde los años de consolidación del poblado (unos 190 años atrás)... Mi padre (un bromista sin límites) decía cosas como: "En Montalbán la gente no se muere y el que se muere lo entierran de pie para que no ocupe espacio" :) ... Pero no creo que ese sea el caso realmente... Lo cierto es que hay bastante espacio en el cementerio y muchas personas (como yo por cierto) ya tenemos allí comprado un espacio, los cuales son muy baratos por pertenecer a la municipalidad... ¡Así que cuando hago fotos allí, prácticamente estoy fotografiando mi futuro vecindario! hahaha :))

This part of town, like everything else in this place, stopped expanding at the beginning of this century when the times of economic, political and social crisis in which we are still mired after almost a quarter of a century of bad governments and rampant corruption began. So now, when I take photos in these streets, you can perceive how the decadence is also reaching these more newer streets of the town... Life is a bit like that: ‘What is to happen, happens’...

Este sector del pueblo, al igual que todo en este lugar, detuvo su expansión a principios de este siglo cuando comenzaron los tiempos de crisis económica, política y social en los cuales seguimos sumidos después casi un cuarto de siglo de pésimos gobiernos y corrupción desbocada. Así que ahora, cuando hago fotos en estas calles, se puede percibir como la decadencia también va llegando a estas calles más nuevas del pueblo... La vida es un poco eso: "Lo que ha de suceder, sucede"...
