A permaculture design for the New House!!! Homesteading in Suburbia

I Want to see Butterflies and Dragonflies Everywhere!

Designing a food abundant garden is the next step in our journey to homesteading. We moved out of the forest, into a house about 6 months ago... The Artemisian Sanctuary will have to be developed while we live 10 minutes away in suburbia!

A couple years ago, I met a permaculturist who was interested in designing the land we are building a Sanctuary on. We came across a few hurdles in order to continue designing this dream:

  • The fact that we didn't know where our house would be was a bit confusing.
  • The design would have to be created with 2 more houses to be built in some not so distant future, without a clue as to where they may be placed.
  • Being that this Sanctuary would be primary, a home for 3 families living in community, we needed to have certain areas designated to be "shared and common".
  • Financial capital was almost none existent for such a massive project.

A couple years later, we find ourselves in a typical suburbian house from the 1950's, and our dreams haven't changed... we're continuing to build self-reliance and grow our community of homesteaders and peppers. Like Jack Spirko (of the survival podcast) says: "helping you live a better life, if times get tough or or even if they don't", that's what we're doing too!

Chickens are on their way, so we can eggs eventually, I'm thinking fruit trees, perennial and annual vegetables, pretty pathways, herbs, flowers, all the pollinators to male the neighbors jealous! No no, I don't want to make anyone jealous, but I would love them to be inspired to grow their own food too. I'm getting to know our closest neighbors now, and I started to introduce self-reliance and mutual-aid so we can have each other's back in this future full of uncertainties. So far, so good!

As for the permaculture design, we just had a walk through of the house. What I need to do now is figure out how much of the property I want to dedicate to veggies, fruits, pollinators, and so on, so that the designing can commence.

It's very exciting for us, I chose to pay for a young experienced permaculturist to design our place, because I don't have any idea where to start, and right now, I don't have the time to gain enough experiential capital to do what I want. The best time to plant a tree is 5 years ago, the next best time is yesterday... Get it done by someone else right now or wait a couple years? We're doing it right now!

Please share your permaculture designs, I'd love to see them!
