La planta de la cual quiero hablarles hoy se llama la Dama de Noche. Es una planta que me ha impresionado muchísimo y que tienes diversas curiosidades, entre ellas que solo florece de noche. Tengo que admitir que desconocía la existencia de esta planta. Un día estaba viendo una película llamadaLocamente Millonarios la cual está ambientada en Singapur. En una escena de la película se realiza una fiesta de millonarios y estos al llegar la media noche se reúnen en el jardín para ver florecer a cientos de Dama de la Noche. Es una escena que me gustó mucho, jamás pensé que años después tendría una planta de esas en el jardín de mi casa.
The plant I want to talk about today is called the Lady of the Night. It is a plant that has impressed me a lot and that has several curiosities, including the fact that it only blooms at night. I have to admit that I was unaware of the existence of this plant. One day I was watching a movie calledCrazy Millionaires which is set in Singapore. In one scene of the movie there is a party of millionaires and they gather in the garden at midnight to watch hundreds of Lady of the Night bloom. It is a scene that I liked very much, I never thought that years later I would have one of those plants in my garden at home.
Está hermosa planta fue un obsequio por parte de un amigo de mi papá. La sembramos en un recipiente colgado del techo del garaje, ya que sus ramas son muy largas y lo ideal es que estén separadas del piso para evitar cualquier tipo de plaga. Siempre tratamos de tener cuidados especiales con esta planta porque sabíamos lo bonito que sería verla florecer. Pasó mucho tiempo para que pudieran aparecer los primeros capullos, nos emocionamos mucho, lastimosamente a los pocos días los capullos se cayeron. Así que eso nos entristeció un poco, sin embargo sabíamos que teníamos que tener paciencia y que llegado el momento la planta iba a florecer.
This beautiful plant was a gift from a friend of my dad. We planted it in a container hanging from the ceiling of the garage, because its branches are very long and ideally they should be separated from the floor to avoid any kind of pest. We always tried to take special care with this plant because we knew how nice it would be to see it bloom. It took a long time for the first buds to appear, we were very excited, unfortunately a few days later the buds fell off. So that made us a little sad, but we knew that we had to be patient and that eventually the plant would bloom.
Pasaron las semanas y la Dama de Noche volvió a tener capullos, está vez nos mantuvimos alerta y decidimos darle cuidados especiales. Cada día el capullo se hacía más grande y pasaba del color verde a un color rosado oscuro. Era muy interesante, era diferente y muy llamativo. Con los días siguió creciendo, pero no sabíamos el día exacto en qué ese pequeño capullo iba a florecer, cómo solo lo hace de noche tuvimos que montar guardias para no perdernos ese icónico momento. De esa forma llegó la noche más esperada, cuando empezó el capullo a abrir. Quiero aclarar que esto es un proceso lento, si bien pasa solo una noche, tarda varias horas en abrir completamente el capullo, así que cada 20 minutos monitoreabamoss la planta e íbamos viendo el avance. El resultado final es simplemente impresionante.
Weeks went by and the Lady of the Night had buds again, this time we were alert and decided to give her special care. Every day the bud got bigger and bigger and went from green to a dark pink color. It was very interesting, it was different and very striking. As the days went by it kept growing, but we didn't know the exact day when that little bud was going to bloom, as it only blooms at night we had to keep watch so we wouldn't miss that iconic moment. That's how the most awaited night came, when the bud started to open. I want to clarify that this is a slow process, although it happens only one night, it takes several hours to fully open the bud, so every 20 minutes we monitored the plant and we were watching the progress. The final result is simply amazing.
Es una flor bellísima, diferente y muy curiosa. Tiene un olor riquísimo, que puedes sentir a varios metros de distancia. Lo más impactante de esta planta es lo efímera que es su belleza. Una hermosa flor que solo podemos apreciarla de noche y por un tiempo limitado. Ya que al amanecer la flor se cierra y se marchita. Semanas de espera para poder apreciarla solo por un par de horas, y créanme cuando les digo que vale absolutamente la pena. Al final quedamos desvelados y amanecimos con un poco de sueño, pero felices de poder haber vivido esa gran experiencia que esta planta nos regala. Actualmente tenemos dos Dama de Noche y me gustaría tener muchas más, para algún día recrear esa escena que ví en la película y reunir a mi familia y amigos una noche a admirar el florecimiento de muchas Damas de Noche.
It is a very beautiful flower, different and very curious. It has a delicious smell, which you can feel from several meters away. The most striking thing about this plant is how ephemeral its beauty is. A beautiful flower that can only be appreciated at night and for a limited time. Since at dawn the flower closes and withers. Weeks of waiting to appreciate it only for a couple of hours, and believe me when I tell you that it is absolutely worth it. In the end we stayed up late and woke up a little sleepy, but happy to have been able to live this great experience that this plant gives us. We currently have two Dama de Noche and I would like to have many more, to someday recreate that scene I saw in the movie and gather my family and friends one night to admire the flowering of many Dama de Noche.
