👩🌾🌴 GROWING COCONUTS AT HOME 🌴👩🌾
What hope for those who plant coconuts! This is the popular phrase that everyone who arrives and looks at the four coconut sprouts planted in the driveway of my house says, Christian and I smile and keep quiet, after all we have a kept secret, and it is not worth entering into discussions, give and take, to add followers in the planting of this wonderful tree that already, although it is tiny, gives us happiness.
Starting the project of green areas for our home was a tribulation, Christian with his plans and design views to achieve the greatest symmetry, choosing species for their ability to adapt to the type of substrate, climate and its aesthetic contribution and on the other hand my dad, full of empirical wisdom and used to throw seeds in every equine and stick any stick or sprout of any plant that was said to be good for headache, stomach ache, asthma or simply one of those native species that are being lost and we must keep the strain, but the point of common agreement between the two was and always will be the coconut, indeed, I can assure that the coconut was a love at first sight.
I tell you how it happened, my dad arrived two weeks ago from Cumanacoa, Sucre State, with four germinated coconuts ready to be transplanted. These coconuts are of a species with yellow fruit, fleshy and with little water that curiously we call "dwarf coconut", and I in my reverie thought that it would be a short tree and I imagined myself already with illusion knocking down coconuts with only to rise in my poor 150 cm of height, However, I was recently saved from that mistake, since the appellative of "dwarf" is related to the fact that in one or two years the plant will already be giving fruits, so it is a precocious tree with respect to the usual coconut trees that can last decades before being able to throw its first load.

Having clarified that point between the three of us, we decided to start planting the coconuts to enhance the front view of the house. We began by cleaning the area to be used, eliminating the low weeds and we tried to fertilize the soil a little with pieces of rotten wood and at sunset, on the night of the waning moon, we made the holes to plant our coconuts, trying to make them as straight as possible, because "A tree that is born crooked, never straightens its trunk". We decided to plant them so that they would form two rows with two trees each at both ends of the walkway, so that their branches would make a natural tunnel when they are big enough.

It's been two weeks now and you can tell how well so much sun, love and water has done them good, because their green shoots are pointing to the sky and Christian, dad and I are happy and anxious to see them grow and soon eat their fruits.
As time goes by, we are still looking for ideas to make our garden a little paradise in the middle of the city.

¡Qué esperanza para quien siembra cocos! Es la frase popular que dicen todos lo que llegan y miran los cuatro retoños de coco orondamente sembrados en el camino de entrada a mi casa, Christian y yo sonreímos y callamos, a fin de cuentas tenemos un secreto guardado, y no vale la pena entrar en discusiones, dimes y diretes, para añadir adeptos en la siembra de este maravilloso arbolito que ya, aunque esté chiquitito nos da felicidad.
Empezar el proyecto de áreas verdes para nuestro hogar fue una tribulación, Christian con sus planos y vistas de diseño para logar la mayor simetría, eligiendo especies por su posibilidad de adaptación al tipo de sustrato, el clima y su aporte estético y por otro lado mi papá, lleno de sabiduría empírica y acostumbrado a tirar semillas en cada equina y pegar cualquier palito o retoño de cuanta planta se dijera que es buena para el dolor de cabeza, estómago, asma o simplemente sea una de esas especies autóctonas que se están perdiendo y hay que mantener la cepa, pero el punto de común acuerdo entre ambos fue y siempre será el coco, es más, puedo asegurar que el coco fue un amor a primera vista.
Les cuento como pasó, mi papá llegó hace dos semanas de Cumanacoa, Estado Sucre, con cuatro cocos germinados listos para ser trasplantados. Estos cocos son de una especie con fruto amarillo, carnoso y con poca agua que curiosamente llamamos “coco enano”, y yo en mi ensoñación pensé que sería un árbol bajito y me imaginaba ya con ilusión tumbando cocos con solo alzarme en mis pobres 150 cm de altura, sin embargo fui sacada de ese error recientemente, ya que el apelativo de “enano” está relacionado al hecho de que en uno o dos años ya la planta estará dando frutos, por lo que es un árbol precoz respecto a los cocoteros habituales que pueden durar décadas antes de poder echar su primera carga.

Aclarado ese punto entre los tres, decidimos empezar a sembrar los cocos para darle realce a la vista frontal de la casa. Empezamos limpiando el área a utilizar, eliminando la maleza baja y procuramos fertilizar un poco el suelo con trocitos de palo podrido y al caer el sol, en la noche de luna menguante, hicimos los agujeros para plantar nuestros cocos, intentando que quedaran lo más derechos posibles, porque “Árbol que nace torcido, jamás su tronco endereza”. Decidimos sembrarlos de manera que formaran dos hileras con dos árboles cada una en ambos extremos de la caminería, para que sus ramas hicieran un túnel natural cuando estén lo suficientemente grandes.

Ya han pasado dos semanas y se nota lo bien que les ha sentado tanto sol, amor y agua, porque sus brotes verdes apuntan al cielo y Christian, papá y yo estamos felices y ansiosos por verlos crecer y pronto comer sus frutos.
Mientras el tiempo pasa, seguimos buscando ideas para hacer de nuestro jardín un pequeño paraíso en medio de la ciudad.
