Mortal Kombat II Coming to Nintendo NES

Color me surprised when I saw this port of Mortal Kombat II for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) port. Currently a work in progress with Update #4 released late in April 2024. This is impressive, especially considering the limitations of the NES this is. Though, I must question those voice samples, I have never heard such good voice from the 8-Bit Nintendo.

Round 1 Fight!

Mortal Kombat II was released squarely in the 16-Bit era of consoles, so a NES port was out of the question. That has not stopped fans, but it did stop Tiger Electronics who did not release a Mortal Kombat II LCD game (but they released nearly every other MK game in many ways (affiliate link).

This port is a work in progress, so things are changing between release. Even little things like columns in the background are getting adjusted.

I do hope the voice samples are going to be in the final version and it works on a real NES console. I will be absolutely floored if that is the case.

Round 2 Fight!

I would be remiss to not mention things that are a bother, a concern outside the voice samples. Graphically, this port of Mortal Kombat II to the Nintendo Entertainment System looks amazing. Sure, there is a bit of flicker and downright sprites disappearing. This is the NES we are talking about here. It is not exactly the most powerful console of its generation.

The sprites are on the smaller side which gives the arenas a weird feel to them. It is hard to pinpoint, the fighters just seem like dolls of some sort fighting. Almost like a Small Soldiers fighting game.

So far, what is here, is impressive. Plain and simple. I have no idea where to download the ROM as I do not believe the team are at that point yet.
