Strolling through the new releases on Steam, I came across this game that at first glance seems quite strange, but that's exactly why it caught my attention, besides, I noticed that most of the opinions were positive. So, taking advantage of the fact that it has a free demo, I decided to try it and see how it is.
Gori Cuddly Carnage is a hack and slash with a curious concept, as we will be at all times on a skateboard. The game starts by introducing us to 3 characters; Chi1-P, a spaceship that has feelings and is depressed. F.R.A.N.K a skateboarder who tries to say swear words, but his programming forbids it. And finally our protagonist Gori, a cat who, despite walking on two legs and being clearly more intelligent than a common cat, does not speak.
We'll see how our spaceship suffers a breakdown due to multiple shots, so we'll take our skateboard and run away, arriving to a new area. The first thing I have to say is that it looks surprisingly good for the type of game it is. The lighting right off the bat catches your attention.
We will move through the alley while learning the mechanics of the game. We will be able to attack with our skateboard, do a little dash to evade, slide on signs or rails and a couple of other things.
Finally we will reach an area where we will be introduced to the first type of enemy: zombie unicorns, which for some reason can also talk. We will fight these unicorns by tearing them apart with our skateboard.
By defeating the unicorns we will continue advancing. The world is quite colorful, it has a psychedelic Cyberpunk style or something like that. As we move forward we will encounter various obstacles such as lasers that we will have to dodge or areas where we will move along the rails.
Later on, we will encounter enemies again, but this time the zombie unicorns will have evolved, now they will be bigger and will have blades on their hooves. In addition to having more life and causing more damage.
The game is ridiculously gory, and that's great. You can tell it's meant to make you feel good about fighting enemies, and it succeeds, with spectacular attacks and slow-motion on the final blows, so you can watch the limbs fly off.
At a certain point we will be forced to upgrade our character, as we will encounter new types of enemies. In this demo, the upgrades we will have available will be a kind of ball with spikes, which will unlock a new type of attack. This attack will be useful for enemies that have a protective barrier, attacking with this ball will destroy the barrier and cause damage. Maybe it's because I wasn't expecting much, but I was surprised to see that the game has these mechanics when it comes to combat, in a way it avoids being a button masher.
We will end up arriving at a very large room where the first boss or mini-boss will make his appearance. It will be a giant hand with an eye in the middle. The combat will consist of avoiding the laser beam that he will throw through his eye and getting close when possible to hurt him. There will also be small enemies around that will shoot acid at us and will be very annoying.
Upon defeating the hand we will continue on our way, we will arrive at what appears to be a new spaceship that we can take to escape from this area, but, while we are looking at the ship, a strange toy box will appear from the shadows. This is where the demo will end. You have to admit that they know how to leave you intrigued to buy the game haha.
It honestly ended up being much better than I expected. Normally these 'sillier' games are nothing to write home about, but this one at least is quite original and has a touch of adult humor that gives it a nice touch. Perhaps what I liked the least is the part of the rails and advancing between platforms, it can be a bit clumsy, but leaving that aside, I thought it was pretty good, I recommend trying it.
