Super Contra - An explosive sequel to a classic that never gets old

Many great titles from Konami emerged for the Nintendo NES, titles that were the origin of many classic sagas. One of them was Contra, which, as it couldn’t be otherwise, had a great sequel.

When it comes to the gameplay dynamics of Super C the first thing we notice is that it remains the same as in the first game; we use one button to jump and another to shoot. However, this time around it also added many changes to the level design, including more complex layouts and faster enemies.

On one hand, we have levels where we must advance from left to right while surpassing platforms, and on the other hand, there are top-down scenarios where we must move upward in the screen.

Something interesting about this sequel is that it has a higher difficulty than the original game. This means that the first hours of gameplay can be a bit challenging, and we will probably lose hundreds of lives. The good news is that as we keep retrying the levels, our skills will improve, and the challenge will become more addictive.

The weapons in this game can only be obtained by shooting the objects that appear flying in certain parts of the levels. Depending on the letter we get, we will obtain a specific weapon. It’s worth noting that some weapons are more useful in specific situations, while others are more recommended for attacking certain enemies. One of my favorites is the ‘S’ because it fires many bullets in various directions, allowing for a better range of attack and protection.

Perhaps the best thing about this game is that you can also play it with a friend at the same time, making the experience simpler and more enjoyable. Of course, both players need to cooperate with each other, because if they focus on preventing the other from getting a better weapon or they abandon their partner, the players won’t make it very far in this adventure.

The truth is that this version of the game offers a challenging and fun dynamic. It has good controls, great music, and a better view of the action than the arcade version, since the screen in that release has a much smaller aspect ratio. This is especially noticeable when playing with a friend.

Now, I will tell you some cool tips to make it easier to defeat the bosses in this action classic:

To deal with this one, we must destroy the four side turrets around it and then aim at the blue circle that will appear in the center. It’s crucial to be on the lookout for incoming soldiers from the interior of the helicopter to avoid getting cornered.

This intimidating tank won’t be difficult if we attack its side cannons first and are alert enough to dodge the shots and the beam from below. Once we’re done with the side cannons, we just eliminate the one remaining in the middle and we will be good to go.

This mechanical spider is a deceptive enemy. What we need to do is shoot at the underside where the legs meet. If it shoots at us, we crouch to dodge its attacks. And if it gets too close, we climb onto it fearlessly, to avoid getting hit. When it’s gets near a corner, we jump off and repeat the tactic until we finish it.

The best strategy to deal with this alien machine is to stay in the middle of the screen and shoot upwards. Whenever the enemy fires in a diagonal direction from a corner, we have to jump to avoid the projectiles and keep shooting at it until it finally falls down.

Against this mechanical monstrosity, we will have to act swiftly. If we managed to arrive to this encounter with the laser weapon or the precious “S”, we could hit multiple cannons simultaneously. It is vital to constantly move from side to side in sync with our shoots to take out the side cannons first, like this will create more safe spots around us.

To finish this alien space ship, we have to position ourselves underneath the red point. This way we’ll have a better chance of eliminating or dodging the enemies that emerge from its sides. We must be quick to dispose of them, because if they manage to surround us we will have to jump and shoot downward to take them out.

Imagen17.jpg

To get rid of this dreadful monster, we need to position ourselves at a safe distance from its ugly face and fire as quickly as possible without moving from that spot. If we have the “S” weapon, it will be a walk in the park.

This skeletal creature won’t give us much trouble if we position ourselves in the middle of the screen and fire at it relentlessly. When it launches its projectiles, we simply have to shoot at them and repeat the process until the monster falls.

This enemy is easy to handle (which is ironic considering it’s the final boss, lol). To defeat it, we need to position ourselves near its front legs and shoot in a diagonal direction at its upper head. If any of its projectiles come directly at us, we have to shoot upward and then continue filling the upper head with bullets, that way the battle will be over in a matter of seconds.
