Wasteland 3 Review

From inXile studios of Brian Fargo the legend came another great game, Wasteland 3 is a postapocalyptic RPG with tactical turn based combat. Original Wasteland started the whole postapocalyptic genre, it inspired Fallout franchise and a whole lot of other games. Wasteland 2 was one of the best RPGs of last generation, but Wasteland 3 is something else, it is a perfect game where choices matter big time. This game is meant to be played many times because in your first playthrough you will barely see 50% of the whole game.

The main mission of your Ranger team this time is to go to snowy regions of Colorado where you will meet a certain individual named Patriarch who will help you rebuild your Arizona base after events of 2nd game if you help him bring back his psycho children who are trying to usurp him. Nothing is as it seems and while exploring the land you will see that like in any postapocalyptic game people went insane. Your goal is basically to bring order, arrest or kill a bunch of lunatics, it is up to you to do whatever you wish. During your travels you will meet a lot of companions who have their own agendas and it is quite easy to end up killing them if they don't like the choices you've made. There is a lot to explore in your around 60h playthrough.

Character creator is straightforward and easy to understand, you want want every character to be proficient in one type of weapon and have 2 or 3 secondary skills like lock picking, mechanics, explosives, leadership and others to help you while exploring locations and talking to NPCs. You can have 6 characters in your party and you can make some crazy combinations with everything this game has to offer. There are many hidden items you won't be able to see in your first playtrough which brings another dose of greatness because the game is designed to be played many times, with different difficulty options it is like playing a completely different game.

Combat can be very interesting (depends on the difficulty) and during my 1st playthrough I played on hard and it was only difficult early on, later you get insane gear options and battles start to become easy. Battles are turn based where every character gets to spend action points like getting your squad members into cover and start using their deadly weapons. You will be fighting a whole lot of different enemy factions, beasts, mutants and synths. It's all a nice spectacle filled with magnificent violence of body parts flying around.

I need to give high praise to game's soundtrack which gives that great country western vibe, it just works excellent with postaypocalyptic setting like this one. Every NPC is voice acted, something that can rarely be seen in this type of games. From technical perspective my only gripe with the game are the long loading times while moving from map to map which you will do often, it stops your momentum somewhat, but it is not a big deal when the game is so good. After finishing the game you will be urged to try one more run to see the different outcomes. If you like Fallout games and you never tried Wasteland franchise now is the time to go for it. Score: 92/100!
