LEAGUE OF LEGENDS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

world championship league of legends from 2019 to 2021

The League of Legends World Championship is an annual tournament hosted by Riot Games. This is the pinnacle event of the season, and determines the ultimate global League of Legends Champion. Worlds 2021 will take place between October 5 and November 6, 2021 in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The first LoL Worlds was staged in 2011 at DreamHack in Sweden. Team Fnatic is the first League of Legends World Champion. Since then, six different teams have won the trophy, with SKT T1 as the only team to hold the triple crown. The following season, Riot Games commissioned the winner's trophy (the Summoner's Cup), which weighed over 70 pounds. Lifting the Summoner Cup is the ultimate achievement for all aspiring League players and athletes. In addition, the World Championship offers a huge prize pool that exceeds $10,000,000 USD.
As the League of Legends scene and player base grew larger, especially with the growing interest in Esports, the League of Legends Championship followed suit. Compared to its first iteration with only eight teams, mainly from the EU or NA, LoL Worlds 2021 will include twenty-two teams from around the world. The steady increase in teams has forced Riot Games to extend the tournament format several times.
The World Championship currently consists of three competitive stages: Play-Ins, Group Stage and Knockouts.
Play-In and Group Stage are both played in a round-robin group format. The knockout stages are played in a single-elimination Playoff format featuring a best-of-five series.

The 2020 World Championships are envisioned as a traveling roadshow across China. The final will take place at the Pudong Football Stadium in Shanghai. However, due to the growing global crisis, the event was downsized to just a Shanghai event. All players must go through a period of quarantine and extensive health checks before arriving in China.
In addition, the original format featuring 24 teams had to be changed because the Vietnamese team canceled their participation. Adjustments were made to the Play-in and Group Stage, mainly promoting all Korean teams directly to the Group Stage.
TOP Esports and JD Gaming pre-tournament favorites flopped at this event, as a new team of up-and-coming superstars was founded at Suning. In the end, it was LCK who reigned supreme and reclaimed the dominance of the League of Legends they defeated two years earlier. Damwon Gaming are crowned champions after dominating the entire competition and losing just three games in their entire 2021 Worlds.
