Dorfromantik: Game Overview

Hello fellow Hivians!

Recently in my spare time I've been playing this lovely little tile placement game called Dorfromantik. It is a seriously chill inducer and is a great way to pass a bit of free time relaxing on a tablet. The developer is German and has been open with the fact that they have largely also been influenced by board games. Fun fact: 'Dorfromantik' (DE) translates literally to (EN) 'Village Romanticization' which is a great name considering the feeling I get when playing.

Gameplay

The game plays similarly to Euro style board games, most notably Carcassonne if you are familiar. However in this one, you place tiles that contain some combination of land type for each tile edge: forest, field, village, water, railroad, or crops. You start off with 40 random tiles to be placed in a stack with only the top tile playable. Tiles generally have to touch another tile to be played and special types including water and railroad are required to either connect to an existing like tile or not touch an edge. Gameplay ends when you run out of tiles.

Additional tiles can be acquired by obtaining a perfect placement (all six edges match) or completing various quests associated with some of the tiles that you draw. These quests either require a specific number of like tiles be attached or hit a minimum number of like tiles attached.

Score

You earn 10 points per side by placing tiles with like edges ie forest touches forest, crops touch crops, etc. Additionally, when completed, special quests yield large amounts of points which vary by the requirements.

As you continue placing tiles you'll end up building out villages sometimes spanning multiple biomes. In this example game below you can see the start of one of my villages that isn't quite going well. That said most of these tiles so far have had perfect placement so as long as I get a bit lucky I could end up with countless more tiles to come.

Where to buy?

The game is played on PC currently though there is talk it might be ported to other consoles. If you are interested, check it out on Steam for $14.

Closing Thoughts

This is definitely not a game for everyone but if you also enjoy tabletop games this is a fantastic solo player for the PC for those nights when you crave a board game but find yourself without a mate to play with.
