Death Stranding Director's Cut: Paying for An Update.

505 Games just decided that it's a good idea to make an update to a game paid, and make it cost at least $10 to anyone who already owns the base game.

This will of course be good for those getting the game now, such as myself, but I can totally understand the frustration for those who already own it, as this does introduce very little, but also makes the game better in ways that are at least a little significant.

The things you get as in-game content are:

  • 2 missions available in chapter 2
  • 1 mission available after finishing the game
  • 40 new orders
  • Ruined Factory available in the eastern region
  • National roads can now be built in mountainous areas
  • Upgraded melee system with new moves
  • Mules are using mounted machine guns against the player
  • Mounted machine guns can be used by the player
  • Ziplines can be used with floating carriers
  • Strands can be used to tie down cargo
  • You can now rest on the bike
  • Items can now be collected from the bike while standing still
  • Firing Range with Drills
  • New Maser Gun
  • Roadster
  • Roadster Long Range
  • Transporter Bike with an attached carrier
  • Buddy Bot
  • Support Skeleton
  • Ammo Pouch Level 2
  • Battery Level 4
  • Stabilizer Level 3
  • Jump Ramps
  • Cargo Catapult
  • Chiral Bridges
  • New Racetracks
  • More customization
  • New Music
  • More Cutscenes
  • And quality of life updates with online updates too.

This sounds like a lot, but it really isn't enough to justify $10. Specially when you have to download the entire game again, keep the previous copy installed, open the game, then you can uninstall the previous one.

Let's not mention that this new version is a double edged sword on performance.
With it coming with:

  • Improved water effects
  • AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution
  • NVIDIA DLSS 2.3.7
  • NVIDIA Image Scaling
  • Intel XeSS

The image scaling tech is most certainly going to help, but there are a lot of new graphical updates to make it more like the PS5 version, which might hurt the performance for some people, even if by just a little.

I can't help but feel this should've been a free update. As all it does is add items and a feel extra things. But well, this is the state the gaming industry has come to now.

This also just feels like rubbing salt on the wound... Great work 505.

Still a great game though.
