The brand new PS5 controller has FINALLY been revealed. I must say that I am pleased to see something that looks like an innovation of sorts. With the new shape and the bold choice of colors, this looks like my kind of controller.
Rather than sticking with the same DualShock design that we have seen ever since 1997, we see something fresh for the PS5. Sure there were slight upgrades with the PlayStation controllers with each new console, starting with the DualShock 2 during the PS2 launch. However if you look at the DualShock 2 next to the DualShock 4, there is only a few differences. Most probably don’t even remember that the original DualShock was just an accessory controller for the first PlayStation. The addition of analog sticks was huge at the time.
In comes 2020 and the DualSense, I like the name a lot. It seems that their goal is to compete with Nintendo’s HD Rumble. I think this is a great move as the Joy Con’s haptic feedback is one of my favorite features of the Nintendo Switch. It’s crazy how realistic it actually feels when it’s in your hands. I really hope that the DualSense is just as good, if not even better.

The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players. We decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design.
We adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud.
We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.
We changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip.
We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.
We’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.
DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset.
We went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design.
We changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop.
My favorite new feature
This is a tough decision for me. I love the addition of haptic feedback, this is so important to me since I am already spoiled with the Nintendo Joy Cons. However I think the feature that I am most excited about could be the new Create button. They didn’t give many details on this part yet, but I really am hoping that it will allow me to easily turn my gameplay into content that I can publish here on Hive.
