However you decide to spend YOUR time is perfectly acceptable, because it is YOURS. There is no real 'Wrong way' to play a game if its single player, as long as you enjoy the time spent playing its okay. In multiplayer, yes there should be some cohesion with the team but beyond that don't let the 'tryhards' and 'trolls' take over the personal gameplay. Playing a specific way because it's 'The Meta' is silly.
