Silver Libertad From El Día de los Muertos

Over the last few years whenever I visit almost any store they are always getting ready for the next big holiday. They never are slow to start preparing for the next selling opportunity even though it is months away. Christmas has become one of their favorites to start selling early, this past year I recall seeing Christmas trees for sale before Halloween had even come.

To my surprise, this morning when I ran into the grocery store to pick up a couple of items what did I see? They are beginning to setup the Halloween candy which means the decorations and costumes can't be far behind... Last time I checked Halloween was still almost three months away. Yet another holiday coming earlier and earlier every year...

That got me thinking about about a silver Mexican Libertad I had come across the other day. While I was searching for an image of a normal Libertad round I found that the Mexican Mint produced limited edition Libertads that are blackened with ruthenium and colorized to commemorate El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead.) Normally I absolutely hate colorized coins, I like to see them in their pristine gold or silver purity. But every now and again something really cool can make me reconsider a colorized coin or round. This is one of those exceptions that I find to be exceedingly well done.

Normally colorized silver is something that I avoid, but this coin I really want to pick up. They only produced 500 and it comes with it's numbered certificate of authenticity. And best of all it a solid Troy ounce of silver under the ruthenium and colorization. The only drawback is the price. Being a mint special edition they run about $140 which is pretty high in my book. I will likely pick one up anyway if I can find a little bit better deal!

I've always found El Dia de los Muertos to be a really fun holiday. For those unfamiliar with the celebration it's held yearly on November 1st and 2nd and people honor their loved ones and friends who have passed away. It's not as somber event at all, it's very festive and vibrant event. People dress as skeletons and paint their faces like festive skulls. If you've never had a chance to take part I highly recommend it! It's a lot of fun!

That will just about do it for my ranting about Halloween coming sooner to stores than it should in my opinion. But it did remind me about this really beautiful silver round.
