Too good to go

untitled.gif

Hello everyone!

Before noon, I went to the bakery, cleant the kitchen and prepared our dinner. Our dinner wasn't anything too fancy but as we wouldn't have to many time in the evening, this seemed to be the best option. Our dinner were some fresh beans with a hamburger. Since a couple of months, we're buying some groceries through the 'too-good-to-go' app. It's basically an app which tells you which shops have packets of food left which are close to their 'best before date'. In practice, it means, the products should be eaten at latest today or tomorrow. We've checked out several different shops and ended up by a Belgian shop called: Okay.

It's a supermarket of the Colruyt group which is one of the participating shops. As it used to be the closest to our home, we started there. It definitely was great value for what we paid. The way of working is as follows: you pay one third of the original value and receive the full value. For example we pay €5 and get food worth atleast €15. It has never been worth less though usually it's worth more, sometimes even €20 and a single time even over €25. Different shops have different ways of working, some only do it for products of their bakery, others just for flowers etc.

At Okay, it's always a 'surprise packet'. That means that there will be food in the package from the 'fresh market', could be meat, fish, vegetables, desserts, ready to eat meals, etc but no bread and such. As there's usually a decent amount of meat / fish inside the packages, we really like them. Yes, it's close to its best before date, but we just put it in the freezer. The day we get the package, we usually eat a ready to eat meal as these aren't that easy to put in the refrigerator. We've had a great variety so far, from burgers over sausages, salami, to nearly a kilogram of white fish filet (forgot which one it was exactly). But yes, the latter made a single pack worth over €25 while only paying €5.

Besides the financial savings, it's great for the environment as well. I don't know the numbers by heart, but a lot of food is being thrown away during its production to consumption cycle. If I can try my best to help a bit to avoid throwing away food, I am glad I can help. I know 'too good to go' is available in several European countries, not sure about other continents. But if it's available towards you, I would really recommend you to try it out! As I've tried out several shops myself, there are better and 'ok-ish' ones so go for a couple of different shops before you make your own conclusions! :)

Conclusion

If you want to save on your groceries bills, try out the 'too good to go' app or something similar! You are both saving money while lowering your ecological footprint!

Thanks for reading! Have you tried out 'too good to go'?
