Genesis 28:10-22

🔑 KEY VERSE:

And, behold, the Lord stood above it and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father. and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed" (Gen. 28:13)

🖊️ COMMENTARY

The city of Bethel was located about eleven miles north of Jerusalem near Ai. It was a border city between the territory of the Israelite tribe of Benjamin and that of the tribe of Ephraim. Today,
Bethel is identified with the village of Beitin, located in the West Bank, five kilometers northeast of Ramallah.

Bethel is a significant place of ceaseless personal encounters Jacob had with God which gave him a highly competitive edge. The most significant difference between two Christians, though they share many things in common, is personal encounter with God. A single encounter with God is superior to a countless human connections, revelations or positions.

Bethel is a place to connect with supernatural help, hence, the marvelous helps Jacob enjoyed from youth to old age across the communities he sojourned. When Jesus instructed that Lazarus' gravestone be taken away, He looked up to God and not down to the dead body which had started decomposing and heaven brought beauty to bear in John 11:38-44.

As the Nigerian situation is becoming more miserable by the day, we have no option than to look up as Jacob did at Bethel which made him exclaim that God was there and he knew it not. Bethel is also a
place of personal renewal of vision, strength, zeal, focus and relationship with God as clearly evidenced in Jacob's life and ministry when he returned there the second time in Genesis 35.

Beloved, we will be doing ourselves a great favor by returning to Bethel from time to time for multifaceted personal encounters. It may be just what we need to cross over from small to great.
