ποΈ COMMENTARY
Following the tragic deaths of her father-in-law, brother in-law and husband, Ruth experienced excruciating pains and heart-aches. Her Circumstances could have made her bitter against the God of Israel who allowed such untold calamity to befall His followers. She would have easily said thus: "lf this is the way the God of Israel treats those that follow Him, what is the point of following Naomi to worship Him"? However, in all these, Ruth refrained from blaming God.
Another obstacle Ruth overcame was her religious background She worshipped Chemosh, the detestable Moabite god that delighted in human sacrifice and encouraged gross immorality. Remarkably, Ruth's timeless statement in verses 16 and 17 revealed the awesome spiritual transformation that has taken place in her life resulting in an undying love for Naomi and her faith in Israel's living God, Jehovah.
God's response to Ruth's amazing faith was equally spectacular. She
became the wife of Boaz by divine providence and ultimately had the great honour of being included in the genealogy of our Lord Jesus (Mt. 1:5). Amazingly, the divine decree (Deut. 23:2) that permanently excluded Ammonites and Mobites from the commonwealth of israel was set aside for her sake.
Ruth wholeheartedly trusted the God of Naomi and the mercy of God accomplished the impossible in her life. In the same vein, our exemplary Christian life can not only draw unbelievers to God but also change the spiritual destinies of many generation yet unborn. Can sinners follow us and reach God in the same manner Ruth followed Naomi.
