Being a rookie as a best man

Last year around this time of the month my friend bade farewell to bachelorhood. Before his wedding preparations he approached me to be his best man of which I gladly accepted. Conversely when he thought of marrying I was not in the picture of being his best man, he had another person in mind. He planned to approach one of his childhood friends who declined the invitation for the reason that he was out of town. When that happened he thought of me and reached out. With the excitement of escorting my friend on his big day, I never knew what a best man is supposed to do. I was a rookie at this, it been my first time, this lead me to start inquiring however no one was there to answer my question.

Notwithstanding we got started with the rehearsals for the wedding and I was paired with the sister to the bride to be. This meant me dancing with her on the wedding line up and it was my first time. By the way I used to be a break-dancer around 2006 and 2007. That’s the only dance I knew so any other type of dance was going to be foreign to me. So a lot of adjustments were supposed to be made individually in preparation for this particular occasion. The preparation where been done a month before the set date for the wedding, meaning I had just a month of learning a new dance other than break dancing.

Moreover dancing with an opposite gender none other than my fiancée was challenging for me. My fiancée was not comfortable with it as well, and she asked me to make a request from my friend if she could be part of the line up and dance with me. I went on and asked my friend unfortunately it could not suffice, so I had an additional task of convincing my partner.

With all this pressure on my hands it got me thinking of foreswearing however I convinced my fiancée and she allowed me to dance. Fast-forward finally the wedding day came and more pressure was on my hands, the marriage blessing was scheduled at 9 am. That very day early in the morning the groom called me to inform me that he never resized his trouser I had to rush to his place so that we could find tailor to work on it. We found some Congolese tailors who did a very good job but we were delayed a bit. At around 8 am we got back to my friends place upon arriving he remembered he never bought his bowtie 🤦🏾‍♂️. The moment he mentioned that frustration was getting the best of me. Remember as I alluded to the the church blessing was at 9 am and the groom had no bowtie 😔 I couldn't give him mine because his was black as seen in the pictures. So we agreed with the rest of the team that I will get the grooms bowtie on our way to the church. It was now about 8:49 am, we stopped in town on our way I started running up and down to find my friend a bowtie. I found the bowtie it was already around 9 am and 30 minutes passed. The minister officiating the ceremony was calling me its was pressure after pressure, we reached the church. There was I with the groom and we looked like twins in our beards. The rest is history now we had a good.

I pulled through learning a new dance however the break dancer in me manifested and the question of being a best man were answered through experience thank you for reading.
