Not A Good Start in Abroad! | Random Chamber Talk | Sep 02, 2024

It was his first workday in Oman. He landed in Oman three days earlier from his homeland. An excited, below-40 worker, with great hope to earn a handsome amount abroad to fulfill his dreams! He was working as a painter under the blazing sun with an above-40 C temperature. He started feeling discomfort in his limbs and trunk; somewhat like a muscle cramp. He drank water and continued his work. The condition was worsening gradually. A few hours later, he developed into a full-blown tetanic muscle spam (painful sustained and involuntary muscle cramps/spasms) all over his body!

He was quite distressed when came to us. Three of his friends came who were busy massaging his muscles! We started intravenous fluids with an injection of calcium gluconate in it. He started feeling better and his muscles started to relax gradually. By the time the fluid was finished, he was free from the painful spasm.

We get many patients like him during the summer. Due to extreme heat, many workers come with severe dehydration and painful muscle cramps/spams. That is not a pleasant experience. This patient's first workday experience wasn't a pleasant one either!
