Hello everyone!. I thank @thebighigg for introducing me to this community in some way, as the 90's was a very important time for me. I was just a kid that decade, but I lived it all and my best childhood memories go between the experiences with my family and the amazing things that existed in terms of music and technology.
Today I just want to talk about what is still my favorite musical album, it is a Spanish album, but with the potential to be one of the best recordings in the world, and with each passing year it consolidates more and more as a genius of Latin rock. Let's start by listening to its cover letter.
¡Hola a todos!. Agradezco a @thebighigg por haberme presentado esta comunidad de alguna manera, ya que los 90's fue una etapa muy importante para mí. Solo era un niño esa década, pero la viví completa y mis mejores recuerdos de la infancia se van entre las vivencias junto a mi familia y las cosas increíbles que existían en cuanto a música y tecnología. Hoy solo quiero hablar del que sigue siendo mi álbum musical favorito, es un disco en español, pero con el potencial de ser una de las mejores grabaciones en el mundo, y con cada año que pasa se consolida más como una genialidad del rock latino. Comencemos escuchando su carta de presentación.
A couple of days ago I discovered that once again my country Venezuela is not included in the next world tour of the barranquillera Shakira, but it doesn't surprise me, I already knew it, and I have had ideas of going to Colombia again to see the tour, but economically and politically I feel it would be a mistake for me, so maybe I should settle for internet advertising while the video of an official concert comes out.
I only know that in the afternoons while doing my business I have listened again to this album, already two days in a row, ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones, released in 1998. I don't know if my friends outside of Hispanic America know Ciega, Sordomuda, the first single from the album, but here it is a classic of classics and one of the most important Spanish language songs of the 90's. Its impact continues to impose itself on the music industry. It's impact continues to be a major part of the repertoire of this now world-renowned artist.
Hace un par de días descubrí que nuevamente mi país Venezuela no está incluido en la próxima gira mundial de la barranquillera Shakira, igual no me extraña, ya lo presentía, y se me han pasado ideas de ir nuevamente a Colombia para poder ver el tour, pero económica y políticamente siento que sería un error para mí, así que quizás deba conformarme con publicidad de internet mientras sale el video de un concierto oficial. Solo sé que en las tardes mientras hago mis cosas he escuchado nuevamente este álbum, ya dos días seguidos, ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones?, publicado en 1998. No sé si mis amigos fuera de hispano américa conocen Ciega, Sordomuda, el primer sencillo del álbum, pero aquí es un clásico de clásicos y una de las canciones en español más importante de la década de los 90's. Su impacto se sigue imponiendo en el repertorio de esta artista ahora conocida mundialmente.
Everyone loved Shakira at the time. Her sound is always in tune with what's happening in the music market, and the late 90's was no exception. She was coming off a successful first international album that kept her very busy between 1995 and 1997, so expectations were high for her next release.
When Dónde Están Los Ladrones appeared, success was imminent. The album had everything, and unlike the light pop of Pies Descalzos, her previous album, this new work was loaded with lots of rock, powerful ballads and the unforgettable Ojos Así, where in an era of change of look Shakira began to show that she could have pop hits mixed with world music, plus she introduced us to the power of her hips in the Arabic dance that so many little girls began to imitate in the Spanish-speaking world.
Todos amaban a Shakira en esa época. Su sonido siempre está acorde con lo que está pasando en el mercado musical, y a finales de los 90's no era la excepción. Ella venía de un exitoso primer álbum internacional que la mantuvo muy ocupada entre 1995 y 1997, así que las expectativas eran altas para su siguiente trabajo. Cuando apareció Dónde Están Los Ladrones el éxito fue inminente. El disco tenía de todo, y a diferencia del pop ligero de Pies Descalzos, su álbum anterior, este nuevo trabajo estaba cargado de mucho rock, poderosas baladas y la inolvidable Ojos Así, donde en una era de cambio de look Shakira comenzó a mostrar que podía tener éxitos pop mezclados con música del mundo, además de que nos presentó el poder de sus caderas en la danza árabe que tantas pequeñas comenzaron a imitar en los hispano hablantes.
I was only 10 years old in 1998, but I was already a music lover and I think it was that year when I started to get interested in bands that already had a lot of influence in my country, the Backstreet Boys and Limp Bizkit were part of my daily life, and that year my ex-girlfriend Britney Spears also appeared in the industry, but regarding music in Spanish, not everything had that international export sound like now and I think that was important for this album.
I didn't have it in physical form until 2000, but I had a cassette where I listened to it on my Walkman. I sang some songs from this album in the classroom, in some activities they did, God, what a time!
Yo solo tenía 10 años en 1998, pero ya era amante de la música y creo que fue ese año donde comencé a interesarme por bandas que ya tenían mucha influencia en mi país, los Backstreet Boys y Limp Bizkit eran parte de mi día a día, y ese año también apareció en la industria mi ex novia Britney Spears, pero respecto a música en español, no todo tenía ese sonido de exportación internacional como ahora y creo que eso fue importante para este álbum. No lo tuve en físico sino hasta el 2000, pero tenía un casete donde lo escuchaba en mi walkman. Canté algunas canciones de este álbum en el salón de clases, en algunas actividades que hacían, Dios, que tiempos!...
Ciega, Sordomuda and Tú, were number one hits on Latin Billboard, so everyone knew those songs. Inevitable was used by Pepsi for publicity and was very successful, in fact that is my favorite music video from the album.
For the second part of '99, while Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin were taking over the U.S. market, the song Ojos Así, accompanied by the Mtv Unplugged concert began to be played in countries where Shakira never imagined to reach, and I am referring to the East, Arab and Asian countries, being a song in Spanish. She was definitely ready to expand her career and I was ready to follow her forever. Being a 1998 album, it continued to be a hit throughout the year 2000, almost until December, as songs like Si Te Vas, No Creo and Moscas en la Casa were also played a lot.
Ciega, Sordomuda y Tú, fueron éxitos número uno en Latin Billboard, así que todos conocieron esas canciones. Inevitable fue usada por Pepsi para hacer publicidad y le dio mucho éxito, de hecho ese es mi video musical preferido del álbum. Para la segunda parte del 99, mientras Enrique Iglesias y Ricky Martin se apoderaban del mercado estadounidense, la canción Ojos Así, acompañada de concierto Mtv Unplugged comenzó a sonar en países donde Shakira jamás imaginó llegar, y me refiero al oriente, países árabes y asiáticos, siendo una canción en español. Definitivamente ella estaba preparada para expandir su carrera y yo estaba preparado para seguirla para siempre. Siendo un álbum de 1998, siguió siendo un éxito todo el año 2000, casi hasta Diciembre, ya que también sonaron mucho canciones como Si Te Vas, No Creo y Moscas en la Casa.
I have enjoyed Shakira's music a lot since then, and although I already liked her since 96 when I really got to know her music and although my parents, as music teachers still hate her voice, it was the album Dónde Están Los Ladrones that made me fall in love and made me a true fan.
Everything she has done so far I like, she has always stuck to pop and has fused it with Andean music, tango, Arabic music, African songs, bachata, rap, merengue, reggae, rock, reggaeton, salsa, electronic music, Indian dances, Hip Hop dances and has made me sing songs in Portuguese, French, German and so on, in short, being her fan has helped me to know a little bit of everything.
He disfrutado mucho de la música de Shakira desde entonces, y aunque ya me gustaba desde el 96 cuando realmente conocí su música y aunque mis papás, como profesores de música aún detestan su voz, fue el álbum Dónde Están Los Ladrones el que me enamoró y me hizo un verdadero fan. Todo lo que ha hecho hasta ahora me gusta, siempre se ha mantenido atada al pop y lo ha fusionado con música andina, tango, música árabe, cantos africanos, bachata, rap, merengue, reggae, rock, reggaetón, salsa, música electrónica, bailes de la india, bailes de Hip Hop y ha logrado que cante canciones en portugués, francés, alemán y demás, en fin, ser su fan me ha ayudado a conocer de todo un poco.
The Shakira with black hair, that is nostalgia, and the change of her hair color and the turn of the millennium coincided with her move to the Anglo-Saxon market and make more competitive music to be at the top.
I have enjoyed every facet of her and I hate it when people criticize her changes, as change in artists and people is normal. I would love for her to do a Latin rock album again, I don't know if it will happen, but if it doesn't it's ok, because the 90's were unique and so is this album. I imagine that many of you who read me know this music, but if you have never heard Dónde Están Los Ladrones, I recommend all these singles that I have left in the videos of this post, plus the title track, Que Vuelvas, Sombra de Ti and one of the most transcendental even though it was not a promotional single, “Octavo Día”. In fact I say goodbye sharing again my cover of the latter together with the amazing @fernanblog. La Shakira de cabello de negro, eso sí que es nostalgia, y es que el cambio de su color de cabello y el cambio de milenio coincidieron con su paso al mercado anglosajón y hacer música más competitiva para estar en las cimas. Yo he disfrutado cada una de sus facetas y odio cuando la gente critica sus cambios, ya que el cambio en los artistas y en las personas es algo normal. Me encantaría que ella hiciera un disco de rock latino nuevamente, no sé si ocurra, pero sino no pasa nada, porque los 90's fueron únicos y este álbum también. Imagino que muchos de los que me leen conocen esta música, pero si nunca has oído Dónde Están Los Ladrones, te recomiendo todos estos sencillos que he dejado en los videos de este post, además de la canción que da título al álbum, Que Vuelvas, Sombra de Ti y una de las más trascendentales aunque no fue sencillo promocional, "Octavo Día". De hecho me despido compartiendo nuevamente mi cover de esta última junto al asombroso @fernanblog. Estoy alegre de que exista esta comunidad en Hive, e invito a mis amigos que vivieron los 90's a suscribirse y publicar, vale la pena hacer popular este espacio 😉
