Cyber Security Community is Live!

I have always wanted to create a Cyber Security community here on Hive/Steem since I started on this platform more than 2 years ago. The community feature was made available not too long ago and hence, this community is born.

About the community

10 years ago, the term "cyber security" was not even a thing. People were more familiar with computer security, network security then IT security. Eventually, the industry started to realize that the use of information technologies is getting ubiquitous and these different areas should not work in silos. That is when these various security areas started to be collectively referred to as "cyber security".

As the world gets more and more connected, cyber security becomes increasingly important. Daily objects that we see on the roads and in our homes are getting connected to the internet. A loophole on your IP camera may lead to the loss of privacy for your loved ones. A vulnerability on your car may lead to accidents. And a flaw in the industrial systems in a power plant may lead to loss of power to an entire city.

Cyber security encompasses not just technology, but also people and processes. That is why this community is formed to create awareness and interest among people. The mission of this community is to educate people about the importance of cyber security, information security and data privacy. At the same time, it is also for like-minded security professionals or enthusiasts to mingle.

The rules are simple,

  1. Posting of irrelevant content to this community may be downvoted.
  2. Original content is strongly encouraged.
  3. Plagiarism is strongly discouraged.
  4. Only cross-post content of other authors that are relevant to this community.

I look forward to your introduction post to the community and please join the Discord server if you want to interact with each other further.

A little about myself

I am almost 9 years in the cyber security industry. I began as an ethical hacker for one of the big four audit firms. During which, I also did other kind of security testing such as vulnerability assessments and source code reviews.

Subsequently, I moved to an end-user environment and did security engineering/administration. I am fortunate to be given hands-on experience with multiple security products. Now I am with a FinTech and dealing with mostly level 2 information security risk assessments and data privacy matters.

Through this community, I hope to know more fellow security professionals and also hopefully to also bring some aspiring folks to this industry. The cyber security industry is always short of talents as malicious actors continue to outnumber us. Hence, if you are considering a career change, do have a look at this space.
