A DAO for Applied Arts on Hive

The Beginning

Hi everyone,

This is my first attempt to get my skin into the game and start a project on HIVE. I am full time engaged in our company, my goals and perspectives evolve around #web3, blockchain and what great things can be done within a #decentralized value system. Most of you’ve been probably much longer in this field than I and have more expertise in blockchain ecosystems, especially #Hive. So here I am with my project and I feel like a very beginner. And I am asking for your support and contribution.

However this proposal turns out, I LOVE beginnings.

A DAO for a Museum - an experiment.

For the past year I have been forming a #DAO for the Museum of Applied #Arts (MAK) in Vienna. I loved the idea from scratch, the museum is very progressive, delving into digital arts and design and has a huge collection of design pieces which it displays in its digital collection “MAK Sammlung Online”. Also - taking information from their website - they seemed to be well-connected to their audience. So why not try and create a DAO which supports the #Museum - why not apply an organizational form as an extended digital entity, creating a #community that would support the mediation of art and creation of exhibitions.

We imagined various opportunities for artists and art lovers, for curators and visitors, a community where artists could meet their audience and potential collectors and supporters. #Artists declared they would love to produce commissioned digital #artwork, the digital collection could be tokenized by involving digital creators.

The greatest challenge was the centralized thought of the idea: This was not a DAO if the museum was to #finance all the future projects, have a say in future projects and would define rules of the DAO without asking its members. What we imagined as an opportunity was more a fantasy. A DAO has to be free of an “owning entitiy” - it is owned by its members.

So here I am still looking for the opportunity. I still believe in the idea of a digital decentralized entity that supports an established institution. And I still believe that in this #collaboration there are many opportunities which can be discussed.

The MAK DAO is not there to produce for the Museum of Applied Arts or artists should not primarily join in hope of recognition for their artwork by the Museum of Applied Arts. I believe MAK DAO is a community coming together to discuss the digital future of museums and the relevance of an emerging pop culture in a museum context.

☝️For me the MAK DAO is a community of artists, art lovers, visitors, collectors and curators who would love to see museums and art institutions to level up into web3.

An Avatar is a piece of Applied Art

Well, maybe not the above as in terms that will be recognized as such by future generations, it was never in the high charts. Nevertheless, it was an #NFT created on Tezos #Blockchain which I bought and made into my avatar - matching my alias Elmira Bear. And in this function it will have a history and a purpose of its own.

See, web3 is full of Applied Art, some here to stay and be recognized by some future generations and some to go down the road to oblivion. There are various areas where #art is created for a purpose, the PFPs being only one of them. There is skins for online gaming, digital fashion, digital artefacts (yes, consumerism is quite keen on those), there is entire worlds for AR and VR, online galleries and much more. And all this matches in a way what we consider design in real life: architecture, exhibition design, fashion design, you name it.

So why not found a DAO for Applied Arts (and call it MAK DAO), and start discussing, collecting and commenting on Applied Art in Web3 while roaming the web?
