Hi everyone! I’m back to Hive after a long time, and if you’re wondering why I disappeared for so many months, here’s the answer: I ran out of motivation and ideas for content. For those who don’t know, I suffer from persistent major depression and have had to go through periods where I simply don’t feel like doing anything, and anhedonia forces me to lie in bed staring at the ceiling. Well, I think I’ll talk a bit more about that in another post in the Catarsis community.

They have a natural authenticity; they don’t force themselves, they don’t compete; each one enchants with its own charm; they are noble and serene products of nature.
Creo que mi percepción sobre ellas deja bastante claro que me fascinan, es por ello que el hecho de que tenga una obsesión con dibujarlas no sea algo extraño, además, por cuestión de estética: me resultan infinitamente interesantes de contemplar, analizar y reproducir en un lienzo. I think my perception of them makes it quite clear that I’m fascinated by them, which is why the fact that I have an obsession with drawing them isn’t strange. Additionally, for aesthetic reasons: I find them infinitely interesting to contemplate, analyze, and reproduce on a canvas. But I won’t lie to you; there are certain types of little flowers that, for me, illustrating them poses quite a challenge.

Si me preguntan cuál fue el reto de este dibujo diría sin dudar que el botón central que está conformado por una gran cantidad de una especie de pequeños capullitos de color amarillo, no me satisfizo del todo el resultado de esa parte, siento que me faltó mayor análisis visual para entender cómo funcionaba, pero tomando en cuenta que la referencia es una fotografía y no es costumbre para mi dibujar cosas realistas, quedo bastante presentable.
If you ask me what the challenge of this drawing was, I would say without hesitation that it was the central bud made up of a large number of small yellow buds. I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the result of that part; I feel like I lacked greater visual analysis to understand how it worked. However, considering that the reference is a photograph and it’s not customary for me to draw realistic things, it turned out quite presentable.
🖍️ Me preguntarán ¿cómo lo hice entonces? Pues partí trazando el boceto de la flor, más un círculo de color amarillo y luego le añadí perspectiva con unas especies de escamas y semicírculos superpuestos unos sobre otros. Así fue que di forma y textura al botón central. Di profundidad al color amarillo con un lápiz de color mostaza, un ocre y un toque de naranja.
You may ask me how I did it then. Well, I started by sketching the flower, plus a yellow circle, and then added perspective with overlapping scales and semicircles. That’s how I gave shape and texture to the central bud. I added depth to the yellow with a mustard-colored pencil, an ochre, and a touch of orange.
🌿 Algo que no me satisface para nada es el tallo que hice, ¿por qué? Porque tomando en cuenta la estructura de las Dalias, su tallo y sus hojas: tienen un tamaño y una orientación diferente a las que ilustré, es decir, que dibujé esas cosas de forma incorrecta.
Pero para hacerlos tomé de referencia imágenes de hojas de internet, mi intención era que se vieran convexas, pero no lo logré, le di mucha profundidad en el centro aplicando una paleta desde el más opaco y oscuro de los verdes que tenía, al más claro. Quizá por eso no logré que se vieran de la manera en que quería: di demasiada profundidad. Saqué brillo para que se notase el relieve en la estructura de las hojas con la esquina de la goma de borrar que traen incorporados los lápices.
Tengo que admitir que en esta parte del dibujo a pesar que fue una de las primeras, no le tuve mucha paciencia y coloreé con trazos bruscos en lugar que de forma circular delicadamente.
Something that doesn’t satisfy me at all is the stem I made. Why? Because considering the structure of Dahlias, their stem and leaves have a different size and orientation than those I illustrated, meaning I drew those things incorrectly. But to create them, I referenced images of leaves from the internet; my intention was for them to look convex, but I didn’t achieve that. I gave too much depth in the center by applying a palette from the darkest and most opaque greens I had to the lightest. Perhaps that’s why they didn’t turn out the way I wanted: I gave too much depth. I added shine to show the relief in the structure of the leaves using the corner of the eraser that comes with pencils.
I have to admit that in this part of the drawing, despite being one of the first sections, I didn’t have much patience and colored with harsh strokes instead of delicately in circular way.
🌼 Luego siguieron los pétalos secundarios de color blanco con toques de rosa, esta fue sin duda la parte en la que tuve más cuidado, ya que si me equivocaba el lienzo iba a quedar manchado y con borrones en zonas más evidentes en este caso en esas zonas blancas. Pinté suavemente con tonalidades profundas y más suaves de rosa para dar profundidad con sombras, también usé gris azulado para esas sombras sutiles y limpias que habían en los pétalos. Por último les agregué un toque de verde y amarillo en el inicio de varias como indicaba la fotografía. Esta fue una de las cosas que más me gustaron del dibujo, lo delicados y limpios que se ven esos mini pétalos.
Then came the secondary petals in white with touches of pink; this was undoubtedly the part where I was most careful since if I made a mistake, the canvas would end up stained and smudged in more obvious areas—in this case, those white areas. I painted gently with deep and softer shades of pink to add depth with shadows; I also used bluish-gray for those subtle and clean shadows on the petals. Finally, I added a touch of green and yellow at the base of several petals as indicated in the photograph. This was one of the things I liked most about the drawing the delicacy and cleanliness of those mini petals.
🥀 Llegó la hora de lo que me llevó más tiempo hacer en el dibujo y de lo que quedé realmente orgullosa: Los pétalos. No sé bien cómo explicar cómo los hice, en esta parte me guié lo máximo posible de la fotografía, utilicé morado y magenta oscuro para hacer las sombras (además de color negro), rojo como color base, y para las partes más claras utilicé un color melocotón, en las zonas más claras en donde el color base empieza a aclararse, para difuminar la degradación siempre hay que usar un lápiz de color de uno tono más claro, esto en base a la necesidad de cada uno. Yo en este caso no usé un naranja para matizar porque habría cambiado por completo la paleta de colores que tiene originalmente la flor en la fotografía.
The time has come for what took me the longest to do in the drawing and what I am really proud of: the petals. I’m not sure how to explain how I made them; in this part, I followed the photograph as closely as possible. I used purple and dark magenta for the shadows (as well as black), red as the base color, and for the lighter parts, I used a peach color in the areas where the base color starts to lighten. To blend the gradient, you always need to use a colored pencil that is one shade lighter, depending on individual needs. In this case, I didn’t use orange for shading because it would have completely changed the color palette that the flower has in the photograph.
Por cierto, no lo comenté al principio, pero lo que está escrito en la parte inferior del dibujo es el nombre de mí amiga.
En fin, a pesar de los detalles, todo en conjunto se ve bastante bien, así que no me mutilaré psicológicamente por los errores sin tomar en cuenta los aciertos. ¿A ustedes qué les pareció esta flor? 👀
