Hi everyone! It's time for the a weekly battle challenge, and the challenge for this week is Spirit Hoarder.
About the Monster
Spirit Hoarder
Spirit Hoarder is a low mana cost (3) Legendary Neutral card with low health (3), 1 Magic attack, 1 Speed and has the Triage ability at level 1. It gets the Dispel ability at level 2 and Blind ability at level 3. I have a level 1 version of the card, but I'm using a rented gold level 2 version with the Dispel ability.
Ruleset
Target Practice: All Ranged and Magic Attack Monsters have the Snipe ability
Only the Fire, Earth, Death and Dragon Splinters can be used
Mana Cap: 30
Format: Modern
Cards & Line Up
Summoner
Position | Name | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | Failed Summoner | I placed it in the first position as I do not expect it to be taken out first due to the Target Practice ruleset. Plus, it may potentially reflect some Magic damage. |
2 | Mycelic Slipspawn | I used in position 2 so that it'll be attacked first, with its Taunt ability. With the Target Practice ruleset, I'll know that this is the card that gets attacked first. |
3 | Regal Peryton | It's here to provide Magic damage. At level 3, it gets 3 Magic damage in total with the boost from Obsidian, and is fast and will usually get to attack first. |
4 | Queen Mycelia | It gives the entire team 2 additional Shields with its Protect ability and it helps the team last a little longer if the opponent uses Melee or Ranged cards. |
5 | Spirit Hoarder | It's Triage ability is pretty useless here due to the Healed Out ruleset and but it's low cost and still useful in bypassing shields to do damage. |
6 | Djinn Biljka | It is also low cost and has the Camouflage ability which allows it to be attacked last. |
Strategy
The Healed Out ruleset meant that no heals are allowed and Monsters like the Spirit Hoarder provide little advantage to the deck. The Target Practice ruleset also meant that the Magic and Ranged Monsters will be attacked first. As such, I made sure to include Mycelic Slipspawn to take the initial damage, and low cost Magic Monsters to quickly take out the opponents' Ranged and Magic Monsters.
The opponent chose to use the Death Splinter, with the summoner Thaddius Brood, which is removed any advantage I had with the +1 to Magic Attack from Obsidian. Fortunately, the opponent used a good number of Magic and Ranged cards with low health, I managed to take out them relatively quickly. I could take the rest of the Monsters out more easily after the high damage ones were quickly taken out.
Thoughts on the card
Spirit Hoarder is one of the Magic Neutral Splinter cards that I really like, as it has the Triage ability, and is a versatile card that can be used in many situations. I love to use it together with Mycelic Slipspawn as it keeps it alive longer. It's also great for use in rulesets like Little League and Equalizer, where its low mana cost can put it at an advantage.
