Se puede decir que mi conexión con los juegos de mesa ha sido desde siempre. Cuando tan solo era un niño, mi curiosidad por estos juegos era muy evidente y esto también era más alimentado por el hecho de tener una familia con un buen gusto por esta clase de juegos. Recuerdo que siempre me acercaba a ellos cuando jugaban cartas, dominó o ludo, y como un buen observador siempre trataba de entender el desarrollo del juego y las estrategias que cada jugador llevaba a cabo a fin de alcanzar la victoria. Dicha curiosidad se convirtió en un hábito especial de juego, razón por la cual mi madre se sintió impulsada a regalarme mi primer juego de mesa.
Recuerdo que para ese entonces estaba en mi cuarto año de primaria, y como regalo de navidad mi mamá me dió un juego llamado "Reto al conocimiento". Debo admitir que al principio no me agradó tanto el juego, quizás porque a mi hermano le regalaron una bicicleta y en comparación a mi regalo, parecía más divertido y emocionante, pero aquella reacción cambiaría totalmente con el pasar de los días. Hasta ese entonces no tenía idea alguna sobre ese juego y era primera vez que escuchaba de él, así que en los primeros días traté de entenderlo para poder jugarlo de la mejor manera posible.
It can be said that my connection with board games has been around forever. When I was just a kid, my curiosity for these games was very evident and this was also further fueled by the fact that I had a family with a good taste for this kind of games. I remember that I always approached them when they played cards, dominoes or ludo, and as a good observer I always tried to understand the development of the game and the strategies that each player carried out in order to achieve victory. Such curiosity turned into a special habit of playing, which is why my mother felt compelled to give me my first board game.
I remember that by then I was in my fourth year of elementary school, and as a Christmas present my mom gave me a game called "Challenge to Knowledge". I must admit that at first I didn't like the game so much, maybe because my brother was given a bicycle and in comparison to my gift, it seemed more fun and exciting, but that reaction would totally change as the days went by. Until then I had no idea about this game and it was the first time I heard about it, so in the first days I tried to understand it in order to play it in the best possible way.
Este era un juego de memoria muy interesante y peculiar, parecido al ludo con respecto al recorrido que tienes que seguir para llegar a la meta. A través de un dado ibas avanzando por varias casillas las cuales estaban enmarcadas o identificadas con varios colores. Si caías en una casilla con un gran signo de interrogación, tenías que pasar una especie de prueba, y ¿De qué se trataba dicha prueba? Pues haciendo honor a su nombre, era un reto al conocimiento. Para eso, había un juego de cartas con varias preguntas identificadas según el color. Cada color tenía un tema específico, los cuales podían ser sobre materias como geografía, historia, química y matemáticas.
El nivel de dificultad de aquellas preguntas era intermedio, lo cual hacía muy interesante el desarrollo de dicho juego. En la ruta marcada habían casillas con un color específico, lo cual indicaba una pregunta específica, mientras que otras tenían varios colores, lo cual te daba la opción de escoger la pregunta. No recuerdo la cantidad máxima de jugadores pero sé que podían ser varios, y esto hacia más entretenido el juego que ya pasaba a ser un reto a tu memoria e inteligencia. Eran cien cartas con cinco preguntas cada una, y no había comodín alguno para poder avanzar, simplemente tenías que dar con la respuesta correcta.
This was a very interesting and peculiar memory game, similar to ludo with respect to the route you had to follow to reach the goal. By means of a dice you were advancing through several squares which were framed or identified with different colors. If you landed on a square with a big question mark, you had to pass a kind of test, and what was this test about? Well, true to its name, it was a challenge to knowledge. For that, there was a set of cards with several questions identified by color. Each color had a specific topic, which could be about subjects such as geography, history, chemistry and mathematics.
The level of difficulty of those questions was intermediate, which made the game very interesting. On the marked route there were boxes with a specific color, which indicated a specific question, while others had several colors, which gave you the option to choose the question. I don't remember the maximum number of players but I know that there could be several, and this made the game more entertaining and it became a challenge to your memory and intelligence. There were one hundred cards with five questions each, and there was no joker to advance, you simply had to find the correct answer.
Como ven, no era un juego tan sencillo. De hecho, en la mayoría de los juegos mis compañeros eran personas mayores que yo, incluso hasta mis tias y mi madre se animaban a jugar conmigo. Yo tenía una prima que estaba finalizando la secundaria, y a ella le encantaba este juego. En tiempos libres, tomábamos las cartas y nos empezábamos a preguntar el uno al otro, sin decirnos las respuestas. A veces, hasta acudíamos a la biblioteca de la casa para investigar alguna respuesta, pues si solo memorizabamos preguntas y respuestas el juego en sí carecía de emoción. Realmente era un reto a nuestro conocimiento que tomábamos con total diversión.
Una de mis secciones favoritas era la que siempre hacía preguntas sobre siglas. Fue allí donde por primera vez aprendí el significado de algunas como OPEP, INCE, ONU, OEA, entre otros. Estas preguntas eran toda una ocurrencia pues a fin de dar con la respuesta, decíamos e inventabamos cualquier cosa que encajara con cada letra. Creo que el color al que más temíamos era al marrón, porque era el que trataba de historia general, y vaya que esas preguntas si tenían un nivel casi que avanzado. De hecho, al final del juego era el color que más se escogía pues era casi seguro que la persona no acertaría. Realmente era una tortura y castigo por la que todos teníamos que pasar antes de poder ganar.
As you can see, it was not such a simple game. In fact, in most of the games my classmates were older than me, even my aunts and my mother were encouraged to play with me. I had a cousin who was finishing high school, and she loved this game. In free time, we would take the cards and start asking each other questions, without telling each other the answers. Sometimes we would even go to the home library to research an answer, because if we just memorized questions and answers the game itself lacked excitement. It really was a challenge to our knowledge that we took with total enjoyment.
One of my favorite sections was the one that always asked questions about acronyms. It was there that I first learned the meaning of acronyms such as OPEC, INCE, UN, OAS, among others. These questions were a witticism because in order to find the answer, we would say and invent anything that fit with each letter. I think the color we feared the most was brown, because it was the one that dealt with general history, and those questions were almost at an advanced level. In fact, at the end of the game it was the color that was chosen the most because it was almost certain that the person would not get it right. It really was a torture and punishment that we all had to go through before we could win.
En algunos juegos de mesa yo no podía jugar debido a que era tan solo un niño, pero con este juego era totalmente diferente. Fácilmente podíamos jugar todos juntos, y aunque los más adultos y mayores podían tener la ventaja en cuanto al conocimiento de ciertos temas, la verdad es que la victoria estaba al alcance de todos. Agilidad mental, memoria y concentración eran los medios para poder avanzar en el juego, disfrutando de los errores y aciertos que no escapan de bromas y ocurrencias. Era un juego que en cuanto a recorrido no era tan largo, lo cual se prestaba para varias partidas en un tiempo considerable.
Este juego estuvo conmigo durante muchos años, y me habría gustado conservarlo hasta ahora. Lamentablemente, un día en el que la lluvia hizo estragos en casa este juego de mesa se mojó de una manera irreparable, y ni siquiera como una reliquia lo pude guardar. Este juego de mesa fue muy especial para mí, no solo por ser el primero sino por su peculiar manera para jugarlo. Siento que hoy un juego así para un niño sería un poco aburrido, pero para ese niño que una vez fuí este regalo se convirtió en un bonito reto que llegué a disfrutar con la misma emoción que siente un niño con algún juguete especial.
In some board games I couldn't play because I was just a kid, but with this game it was totally different. We could easily play together, and although the older and more mature players might have the advantage in terms of knowledge of certain topics, the truth is that victory was within everyone's reach. Mental agility, memory and concentration were the means to advance in the game, enjoying the mistakes and successes that did not escape jokes and witticisms. It was a game that in terms of course was not so long, which lent itself to several games in a considerable time.
This game was with me for many years, and I would have liked to have kept it until now. Unfortunately, one day when rain raged at home this board game got wet beyond repair, and even as an heirloom I could not keep it. This board game was very special for me, not only for being the first one but also for its peculiar way of playing it. I feel that today such a game for a child would be a bit boring, but for the child I once was, this gift became a nice challenge that I came to enjoy with the same excitement that a child feels with a special toy.
