Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) is an actor that I love, no matter the genre of the movie, he is always in the line of commitment, although we are used to see him in comedy or action movies and in both genres they do super well. But there is one movie where he lends his voice to one of the main characters and that is my favorite animated movie of all time, I love Moana and The Rock plays the demigod Maui.
Although Maui is not designed in the image and likeness of The Rock he does have physical similarities because they both share the Hawaiian heritage and also the character was designed in the likeness of Peter Maivia, Samoan wrestler and grandfather of The Rock, so they do have a lot in common. One of the attributes of Maui that I like the most are his tattoos, the character has his body practically all tattooed with tribal images that represent the story of his life.

In one of the scenes of the movie where the character’s story is told, there is a tour of his body according to the part of the story, the surprising thing is that these tattoos appear as events happen to him that mark his life either positively or negatively, as is the case of the tattoo of his family returning him to the sea for thinking he was born dead, but in the end he gets a new tattoo of Moana, the person with whom he makes the journey to save the earth and that gives him back his semi divinity.
Although in the movie the tattoos appear out of nowhere according to their experiences, in real life the same thing also happens because most people think of making art on their skin when they feel they need to leave something permanent on their body. The same happens with Dwayne Johnson himself, who in one of his arms has a tattoo of a considerable size that covers part of his chest and back, this tattoo is very similar to Maui’s tattoos, as it represents his life and his Samoan culture such as the image of the sun, the turtle, the coconut leaf and other images that I do not remember now but that have an important meaning within his culture.

In 2026 the live action version of Moana is scheduled to be released in theaters where Dwayne Johnson will again play the role of Maui but this time not only with his voice but also his image. I’m looking forward to that date because I want to see how Maui’s tattoos will look on The Rock. In the meantime this year in November we will have the arrival of the animated movie Moana 2 and I will see again Maui’s tattoos and others that have been added to his body.

Dwayne Johnson (La Roca) es un actor que me encanta, no importa el género de la película, él siempre está acorde al compromiso, aunque estamos acostumbrados a verlo en películas de comedia o acción y en los dos géneros les va súper bien. Pero existe una película donde presta su voz a uno de los personajes principales y esa es mi película de animación favorita de todos los tiempos, amo a Moana y The Rock interpreta al semidiós Maui.
Aunque Maui no está diseñado a imagen de The Rock si tiene semejanzas físicas porque los dos comparten la herencia hawaiana y además el personaje fue diseñado a semejanza de Peter Maivia, luchador samoano y abuelo de The Rock, así que si tienen bastante en comun. Una de los atributos de Maui que más me gustan son sus tatuajes, el personaje tiene el cuerpo prácticamente todo tatuado con imágenes tribales que representan su historia de vida.

En una de las escenas de la película donde se cuenta la historia del personaje, se hace un recorrido por su cuerpo según la parte de la historia, lo increíble es que estos tatuajes aparecen a medida que le van pasando sucesos que marcan su vida ya sea positiva como negativamente, como es el caso del tatuaje de su familia devolviéndolo al mar por pensar que había nacido muerto, pero al final obtiene un nuevo tatuaje de Moana, la persona con la que realiza el viaje para salvar la tierra y que le devuelve su semi divinidad.
Aunque en la película los tatuajes aparecen de la nada de acuerdo a sus experiencias, en la vida real también es igual porque la mayoría de las personas piensan en realizar arte en su piel cuando sienten que necesitan dejar en su cuerpo algo permanentemente. Lo mismo pasa con el mismo Dwayne Johnson, quien en uno de sus brazos tiene un tatuaje de un tamaño considerable que cubre parte de su pecho y espalda, este tatuaje es muy parecido a los tatuajes de Maui, por qué en él se representa su vida y su cultura samoana como la imagen del sol, la tortuga, la hoja de coco y otras imágenes que ahora no recuerdo pero que tienen un significado importante dentro de su cultura.

En 2026 se tiene previsto que salga en cine la versión live action de Moana dónde Dwayne Johnson personificará nuevamente a Maui pero esta vez no solo aportando su voz sino también su imagen. Espero con ansias esa fecha porque quiero ver como se harán los tatuajes de Maui en The Rock. Mientras tanto este año en noviembre tendremos la llegada de la película animada Moana 2 y volveré a ver los tatuajes de Maui y otros se han agregado a su cuerpo.
