It has happened to me that I go out to run errands and buy something to eat on the street to eat it while I am in the car many times, and I need to have cutlery. Sometimes it's a piece of cake, cheese, a salad, or even an ice cream, and I don't like the plastic forks or spoons they give, because they are very small and uncomfortable. That's why I like to carry in my purse or in the glove compartment of the car my cutlery that I carry in a plastic bag. But today I thought of doing a project to have a very nice cutlery holder at my fingertips and made by myself, which makes it special.
Me ha pasado que salgo a hacer diligencias y compro algo de comer en la calle para comerlo mientras estoy en el carro muchas veces, y necesito tener cubiertos. A veces es una pieza de torta, quesillo, una ensalada, y hasta un helado, y no me gustan los tenedores o cucharillas plásticas que dan, porque son muy pequeños e incómodos. Es por ello que me gusta llevar en mi bolso o en la guantera del carro mis cubiertos que llevo en una bolsita plástica. Pero hoy pensé en hacer un proyecto para tener un Porta Cubierto muy lindo a mi alcance y realizado por mí misma, lo que lo hace especial.
In my mind I had the design I wanted to make, since I wanted it to be very similar to the Knife Holder used by professional Chefs, and to have the following characteristics:
- I wanted it to be made of fabric, so that I could wash it comfortably when I needed to.
- It should be able to carry a spoon, a fork and a knife.
- That it can even carry two sets of cutlery.
- It should have compartments so that everything is well placed.
- That it can be folded and compacted in 3 parts so that it does not take up much space.
- It should have plastic snaps to close.
En mi mente tenía el diseño que quería realizar, ya que quería que se pareciese mucho a los Porta Cuchillos que usan los Chef profesionales, y que tuviese las siguientes características:
- Que sea de tela, para poder lavarlo cómodamente cuando así lo necesite.
- Que pueda llevar una cucharilla, un tenedor y un cuchillo.
- Que pueda incluso llevar dos juegos de cubiertos.
- Que tenga compartimientos para que todo esté bien ubicado.
- Que se doble y compacté en 3 partes para que no ocupe mucho espacio.
- Que tengo broches plásticos para cerrarse.
There are very few materials that we need to make this cutlery holder. Months ago I acquired with my Hive resources, a machine to place Plastic Snaps, very economical at that time cost me 20 dollars, and brings many snaps of different colors, I love to use snaps in my sewing projects that need it, but it is not imperative to have this tool, as it can be replaced by simply a button or some strips to tie.
Son muy pocos los materiales que necesitamos para la confección de este porta cubiertos. Hace meses adquirí con mis recursos de Hive, una máquina para colocar Broches Plásticos, muy económica en ese momento me costó 20 dólares, y trae mucho broches de diferentes colores, me encanta utilizar broches en mis proyectos de costura que así lo necesitan, pero no es imperativo tener esta herramienta, ya que se puede sustituir por simplemente un botón o unas tiras para atar.

- 1 piece of lining fabric of 20 x 23cms
- Bias tape

These are the pieces of fabrics with which I am going to make the cutlery holder, they are two pieces of printed fabric of 20 x 23 cms and one of lining with the same measures.
First I take one of the printed fabrics and cut it to the width which is the shortest part, the one that measures 20cms, I cut it so that there are two pieces, one of 7 cms and the other one would be 16cms.
Estas son las piezas de telas con las que voy a elaborar el Porta Cubiertos, son dos de tela estampada de 20 x 23 cms y una de forro con las mismas medidas.
Primero tomo una de las telas estampadas y corto a lo ancho que es la parte más corta, la que mide 20cms, corto para que queden dos piezas, una de 7 cms y la otra quedaría de 16cms.
I sew with straight stitching the pieces I cut at one end of the width, where you see below. I make a double hem to ensure that it won't come loose with continued use.
Coso con costura recta las piezas que corté en uno de sus extremos del ancho, donde se ve a continuación. Hago un dobladillo doble para garantizar que no se suelte con el uso continuo.
Now I assemble all the pieces by pinning them together and sewing a straight seam all around the outside edge. The order will be like this: The whole patterned piece right side down, then the lining and on top the two patterned pieces we prepared earlier, as seen below:

In the lower part I create two channels, I mark them with pins and sew a straight seam on the sewing machine. This creates the 3 pockets for the cutlery.
En la parte inferior creo dos canales, los marco con alfileres y paso costura recta en la máquina de coser. Con ello quedan formados los 3 bolsillos para los cubiertos.
With something that has a round shape, it can be a plate or a cup, I used a roll of masking tape, I mark the corners to round them. Then I sew over that mark and then cut with the scissors.
Con algo que tenga forma redonda, puede ser una plato o una taza, yo usé un rollo de cinta adhesiva, marco las esquinas para redondearlas. Luego coso por encima de esa marca y luego corto con la tijera.
I place the bias tape all around the edge of the piece made so far, I cut a little piece of it to place where the tape seam starts and matches where it ends, to give a nicer finish.
Coloco la cinta al bies por todo el borde de la pieza confeccionada hasta el momento, corto un pedacito de ella para colocar donde empieza la costura de la cinta y coincide donde termina, para dar un acabado o terminación más bonita.
It looks like this. I secure with stitching the part where the beginning and the end of the ribbon coincide. Then, the little piece that I cut and sewed in that place I pass it to the back to sew the seam of the well when I turn it over so that it looks good aesthetically in that meeting.
Queda de la siguiente forma. Aseguro con costura la parte donde coinciden el inicio y el fin de la cinta. Luego, el pedacito que corté y cosí en ese lugar lo paso para atrás para realizar la costura del bien al voltear y que este quede bien estético en ese encuentro.
All the sewing is finished as far as the stitching is concerned. Now I place the plastic snaps, indicating the center of the piece, I mark with the punch on the two sides that will contain the snaps.
Ya está terminada toda la confección en lo que respecta a la costura. Ahora coloco los broches plásticos, indicando el centro de la pieza, marco con el punzón en los dos lados que contendrán los broches.
I place the snaps where the perforations of the centers are. First I insert the piece with one end into the fabric, then I place the other piece and press with the pliers to fix it. I do the same on both sides.
Coloco los broches donde quedan las perforaciones de los centros. Primero inserto en la tela la pieza que tiene una punta, luego coloco la otra pieza y presiono con el alicate para que quede fijo. Hago lo mismo en ambos lados.
As you can see the design of this Cutlery Holder holds in place the 3 main pieces of cutlery, which are fork, spoon and knife, so they don't move out of place and don't get scratched. You could even carry more than one set in it. It is very accessible and washable.
Como pueden ver el diseño de este Porta Cubierto mantiene en su lugar las 3 piezas principales de cubiertos, que son tenedor, cucharilla y cuchillo, de manera que no se mueven de su lugar y no se rayan. Incluso podría llevar más de un juego en él. Es muy accesible y se puede lavar.
I really like the design of this cutlery holder, because it folds in 3 parts, to form a roll that is very easy to carry in the bag or trolley, without taking up much space and in a very discreet way.
El diseño de este Porta Cubiertos me gusta mucho, porque se pliega en 3 partes, para formar una rollito que es muy fácil de llevar en el bolso o en el carro, sin que ocupe mucho espacio y de forma muy discreta.
I really like these small projects that solve a situation that seems unnoticed but certainly when we have this comfort we realize that it could have always been better.
Me gustan mucho estos pequeños proyectos que nos solucionan una situación que parece inadvertida pero que ciertamente al tener esta comodidad nos damos cuenta que siempre pudo ser mejor.
