CAPSTONE PROJECT

Have you ever heard of using banana peel to make floor wax? It might sound strange, but it's actually pretty cool!! There are many cleaning products that are full of chemicals that can be bad for our health and the environment. Finding natural alternatives is really important. That's where banana peel as a floor wax comes to mind.

Banana peel as a floor wax is made from bananas; it's obvious naman HAHAHAHAHA. It might seem surprising since we mostly think of bananas as food, and the peel of bananas is mostly thrown away. But banana peels have lots of good stuff in them, like oils and waxes, that make them great for making natural floor wax, it's in RRL.

Why Banana Peel?

Okay, why banana peels specifically? Well, banana peels are actually pretty awesome. They have natural oils and other good stuff that can make floors shiny and clean. And here's the best part: banana peels are cheap and easy to find! Instead of spending a lot of money on fancy cleaning products, we can use something simple and natural.

Beginning of the capstone

Before starting our capstone project, our teacher paired us up, and I got paired with my girlfriend. It took us a while to gather all the materials we needed, especially kerosene, which was really difficult to find. But eventually, we were able to buy some.

We're switching classes at school, and this afternoon my girlfriend and I decided to work on our capstone project since the deadline is next week. We planned to work on it at my house. However, we ran into a problem because our house was locked, and the key was with my sister, who was out with my mom doing grocery shopping at the metro. So, we had to wait for my sister to come back home before we could get inside and start working on our project. Once she arrived, we finally began working on our capstone project.

While waiting, my girlfriend is watching a piece of anime.

When my sister arrived, she brought a delicious milk tea! She got three milk teas, one for me, one for my girlfriend, and one for herself. It's flavored with mango float and tastes very sweet. It's motivating us to work on my capstone project. Especially now days, its very hot here in Cebu(Sugbo-Sugba). I'm so grateful to my sister for this tasty treat!

PREPARATION OF MATERIALS

After enjoying a tasty snack, we're preparing for our capstone project by gathering the materials we need. We prepared banana peels, candles, and lemon grass to use in our project.

Why candle?

Candles are typically made from wax, which can be derived from various sources such as paraffin, Paraffin wax is used for floor wax because it makes floors shiny, protects them from getting dirty or damaged easily, and is cheap and easy to find.

WHAT'S THE USE OF LEMON GRASS?

Lemon grass have a insects repellant. If we use floor wax, it might attract insects like ants because it has a sweet smell like bananas. We looked at a lot of research to find something that repels insects.

PROCESS

First, chop up the banana peel and candle into tiny bits so they can fit inside the cooking pot.

We need a weighing scale to measure things precisely. We measured 0.2 grams of banana peel, 0.25 grams of candle, and 0.10 grams of kerosene.

Take apart the box or tarima, because we need the wood to make a fire for melting our materials/variables.

First, we mix the candle and the kerosene. They melt when we do that. Then, we include the banana peel. We do this because we want the wax from the banana peel. Also, we add lemongrass for insects repellant and to make it smell nice.

When I mixed the candle and kerosene, the fire suddenly grew really big and hot, making it hard to handle. I tried to put in banana peels and lemon grass to calm it down, but it was a challenge. So, I reduced the flame under the pot to bring the fire under control.

When the water in the pot starts to boil, I use a rug to hold the cooking pot. We place the pot on the ground for about a minute to reduce the heat and the boiling because the container for floor wax is made of plastic. This helps prevent the plastic from melting due to the high temperature.

OUTPUT

Once it's cooled down, we pour the solution into the plastic smart dishwashing cup. Then, we leave it to dry for a whole day. After it's dried, we give it a try to see if it works well. And guess what? It's not just effective, but it also has a pleasant lemon grass scent. I tested it by wiping it on our tiles and rubbing it on the rug, and it worked really well!

using banana peels to make floor wax could be a good idea. It's eco-friendly and uses natural ingredients. But we might need to test it more to see if it works well compared to regular wax.
