Chapter 9: Halloween in an Online Preschool

Halloween season is definitely one of the most-awaited events in a preschool classroom. The children are all hyped up with trick-or-treating and wearing their costumes! Halloween party is such a very fun and exciting day. Being in an online set-up, it is indeed a bit more challenging, but that doesn't mean it is less fun. Not in our class, at least. šŸ˜‰

The admin prepared some snacks as treats, instead of candies, and added some halloween elements on them. We then sent the kits to the families, and coordinated with the grown-ups to hide the treats from the children, until the day of the event.

But even before that, our students have already been talking about their possible costumes a lot. And of course, the teachers had to wear one, too! My class partner and I didn't know what to wear yet, so we agreed on letting our students decide for us. Hahaha We asked each one of them to draw what they would want the teachers to wear, and we received the most random ideas. Hahaha.

For me, my students wanted me to be a: mermaid, Everest of Paw Patrol, Wonder Woman, pumpkin, strawberry and mouse. My partner got a different set as well. Hahahaha

It was a bit nakakapressure yet fun. Haha Right after class, I tried picturing out how to fit all those elements in one single costume, and decided to roughly draw it to see how feasible it could be. Haha

This was how it turned out:

I thought about making an Everest headband with a touch of a mermaid. Then with a red shirt, I tried making a red strawberry pumpkin. As for the Wonderwoman, I added a red cape and bracelets for both wrists. The mouse idea came in a bit later, so I decided to just put whiskers on my face directly. haha

The next day, which was a day before our Halloween School Sing, I finally tried to turn my drawing into a reality! Hahaha

I first crocheted the Everest headband. Good thing, I found an old headband here at home! Hahahah Then using a foam sheet, I made a mermaid tail cut-out, and sew it to the headband. To add some sparkles, I covered the foam sheet with a glitter paper then tied a small piece of glitter fabric I have at home. I am not really a glitter-fairy-girly type of girl, but I super love how this turned out!

For the Wonderwoman bracelets, I just used a regular yellow colored paper and a glitter paper for the imperfect red star. hihi. I only have one red shirt and it has a print in front, so I decided to just turn it inside out. Haha I cut masking tape to form the seeds of the strawberry, and then used black felt cloth for the pumpkin's eyes, nose and mouth. Oh! I also added a red cape at the back of the shirt, but it can't be seen in the photos I took. Hahaha

I am really happy about how my costume turned out! It was a nice way to challenge my creativity and resourcefulness!

How about you? Have you tried making costumes before?

Stay sane and safe.
Let's spread happiness!
