Homes Chores | Plumbing

Hello there, my fellow artisans and handcrafts enthusiasts!

I'm back with some house chores I've been doing for the past few weeks. It all started with my moms wishes to change some showers we have outside de actual shower space in the bathrooms. These are used when the pressure of water goes down and we can only get running water in bathrooms with these.

I don't know if its a common thing in houses, but mine has always had them. The ones I was changing were almost as old as me and were broken, so you couldn't hang them in place. When she finally found the ones she to make the change, she didn't hesitate and bought them.

Of course, it falls to me to get them in place. And that's what I'm going to show you!

Prep work

To start any of these works, we need to close the water supply to our house/apartment. Otherwise, it's going to be a problem to do any work. Once we have that out of the way, the other step is to look what we don't need to change. The pipes for the connection looked ok. So the only thing to change was the place where it will hang.

Then, we need the tools. A drill to open the holes, screwdrivers, teflon tape, and any sort of pliers. I'm always using a locking pliers for these jobs. But be careful, if you're working with plastic pipes or pieces, you are better of using your hands to tighten them.

The first order of business is to take off all the pieces of the old shower. There one on the wall that used to be were it hanged. It is broken, so we'll just use a screwdriver to get it off. The other thing is the hose. It is connected to a pipe that goes just below the hook. Just adjust the pliers and it goes right off.

Now off to the messy part.

Base

These new showers came with a better holding system. Instead of using a hook to suspend the showerhead from the floor, it has a base to hold it. This setting is way in Spanish we call this "phone shower" (at least in Venezuela). It looks like an old phone on its rest.

To install this shower base, we need to drill some holes on the wall. We use the previous hole as reference to get the exact measure between the new ones. This old hole will get covered by the new base. Once we have the marks, we'll use a hammer and a nail. This is an old trick to make your drill bits last longer. It also helps to have a starting point from the drilling. That way we avoid any movement of the bit that might damage the tiles.

Once we're ser, we can open the holes on the wall taking into consideration the depth we need. For this, we just need to measure the ramplugs and mark the drill bit with some tape. With the holes in the wall, we can then hammer in the ramplugs. These anchors will help hold the screws in place and as they expand, the base will be held tight on its place.

And that's the next step, we grab the base and place the screws in place. Then, we use a screwdriver to fasten the screws. Thus, we end with a secure base.

Fixing the hose and showerhead

Last but not least, we get to the hose and showerhead. To fix it in place, first we need need to add the rubbers that came with the pack. These prevent water from coming from the hose while it works. We also need to use some teflon tape on the threading of both ends to help this purpose as well.

Once we are set, we can join the hose to the pipe and on the other end we add the showerhead. We make sure to fasten both ends.

To finish the process, we'll need to get the water running once again so we can actually use the shower and check if there are any leaks to fix. In case we have any, it might be because we need to turn the nuts that join the pipe and hose; or hose and showerhead. Otherwise, we are ready to use this.
