Tomorrow, on June 30th, 2020, we celebrate the Social Media Day 2020 in Suriname.
The Social Media Day originally was an initiative of Mashable. As Mashable explains on their Social Media Day landing page:
On June 30, 2010, Mashable launched Social Media Day as a way to recognize and celebrate social media’s impact on global communication. Today, social media is the heart of global communication; and since its inception, Mashable’s been using social media to connect between cultures, movements and super-fandom.

In 2012, my then colleague and now businesspartner Manuella convinced me that we should join in on the celebration and on June 30th, 2012, the first Social Media Day Suriname was held at a local College, where a year later I would start as a lecturer on Social Media, E-Business and Online Marketing, which I'm still doing 7 years later.

Over the past years, the concept behind the celebration on June 30th changed forms many times. In 2017, we decided to launch the Social Media Conference Suriname, an Annual Social Media Conference that grew from 130 participants in 2017, to 190 participants in 2018 and 250 in 2019. This year, due to the current Covid situation, we decided to push the conference back a couple of months and change the set up to a more digital format.

This of course, left a big hole in June, including June 30th, when Social Media Day is celebrated worldwide. So, with a group of local Social Media creators and influencers, we've decide to do something fun. Since Facebook is still consider to be the main Social platform in Suriname, we will be going live on Facebook from 9 AM to 10 PM, featuring different sessions, ranging from motivational sessions, fashion and mental health, to tips for studying, how to make TikTok's and dance videos.

As for what I'll talk about tomorrow. I'll probably focus on Social Media Statistics about usage in Suriname, a little bit of the downside as well as the positives of Covid on Social Media... and who knows, I might end with a slide talking about a decentralized Social Media platform called Hive.
