After having seen Hit Viral, I was very curious about its universe companion, Lookism. Actually, I had gotten to work on editing a fanfic of said work, so the curiosity had been ingrained in me for a while. So after paying the Netflix subscription, I had no excuse not to give it a chance.
The truth, it achieved a pleasant surprise in me. The beginning left me a little unconformed, because of the themes they were dealing with and the attitude of the protagonist, it really made a stir of emotions. But as the story progressed, I was able to learn more about the background of the story, the characters and the creator's perspective on society.
I find it very interesting how it doesn't romanticize Korean society, something that has been popularized by the whole k-pop boom. They have too high beauty standards, sufferable academic demand and many fall into bullying; something even idols have in their past and try to hide as much as possible. It's always good to be shown the bad side, because it makes you want to know the truth.
The fact that the Spanish name for this manwha is “Apari3ncias” hits the nail on the head, encompassing all the teaching and delicate themes that are worked into the play. The best part is that they present it from a point of view that is understandable to the viewer, without overwhelming, but without ignoring the facts. For such reason, I can't pass up the opportunity to recommend “Lookism”.

La verdad, logró una grata sorpresa en mí. El inicio me dejó un poco inconforme, por los temas que estaban tratando y la actitud del protagonista, realmente hizo un revuelo de emociones. Pero a medida que avanzó la historia, pude conocer más sobre el trasfondo de la historia, los personajes y la perspectiva del creador sobre la sociedad.
Me parece muy interesante el hecho de no romantizar a la sociedad coreana, algo que se ha popularizado por todo el auge del k-pop. Tienen unos estándares de belleza demasiado altos, una exigencia académica sufrible y muchos caen en el abuso escolar; algo que hasta los idols tienen en su pasado y tratan de ocultar todo lo posible. Siempre es bueno que te enseñen el lado malo, porque te hace querer saber la verdad.
El hecho de que el nombre en español para este manwha sea “Apari3ncias” da en el clavo, englobando toda la enseñanza y temáticas delicadas que se trabajan en la obra. Lo mejor es que lo exponen desde un punto comprensible para el televidente, sin agobiar, pero sin ignorar los hechos. Por tal motivo, no puedo dejar pasar la oportunidad de recomendar «Lookism».

Plot
It is a plot that at first seems a bit superficial, it seems that it will take lightly certain themes, but it is the style of telling it that makes it special.
We have this boy, short and ungraceful, who is a victim of bullying and constant abuse because of his looks. And it's only because of that, since behind his suffering is a pleasant personality. But his daily struggles make him an ungrateful person with the only support he has: his mother. It is just with this beginning that touches the viewers' heartstrings, because the frustration of seeing how he treats his mother is much greater than seeing how he is trampled on.
But after an unpleasant experience, our protagonist, Hyeong-seok, moves to Seoul and changes schools where he hopes to have a fresh start. But he hasn't even started his new school year journey when he is already publicly humiliated by a misunderstanding, where we see how ruthless they are in this new place. This is where we begin to have some rapport with him, as we observe his suffering and his desires to be a different person.
The awakening brings a surprise to all of us, and that is that Hyeong-seok wakes up in a new and attractive body. Here we can play with the different perspectives of the event, as we could call his new body: the image of his inner self, or perhaps the reward of a higher desire. However, we can also see the duality of the character, where he could fall into social pressures and vanity in obtaining an opportunity of such magnitude. Let's face it, it's probably what any teenager would do.
But this is where the construction of Hyeong-seok begins; when he arrives at his new school he doesn't start to pretend to be someone he's not, but to be better and protect those who have a life similar to his reality. What is most interesting about this dynamic is that both bodies remain in co-existence, and the protagonist maintains both lives in parallel, while studying with his new body and working with his true self.
Although we have eight chapters, how such a situation is possible is not discussed at any point. But we do get a chance to see development of other characters that progress along with Hyeong-seok, which makes the anime much more interesting to watch.
Social situations, economic status, politics, fame, popularity scales, bullying, harassment, friendship, gangs, the search for acceptance and self-love are fundamental themes in the story. So it's definitely a very interesting bet, no doubt its manwha should be much better.

Tenemos a este chico, bajo y poco agraciado que es víctima de bullying y abuso constante por su aspecto. Y es únicamente por eso, puesto que detrás de su sufrimiento está una personalidad agradable. Pero sus luchas diarias lo hacen ser una persona desagradecida con el único apoyo que tiene: su madre. Es justo con este inicio que toca las fibras más sensibles de los espectadores, porque la frustración de ver cómo trata a su madre es mucho más grande que ver cómo le pisotean a él.
Pero luego de una desagradable experiencia, nuestro prota, Hyeong-seok, se muda a Seúl y cambia de escuela donde espera tener un nuevo inicio. Pero no ha comenzado su travesía de nuevo año escolar cuando ya es humillado públicamente por un malentendido, dónde vemos lo despiadados que son en este nuevo lugar. Aquí es donde comenzamos a tener cierto acercamiento con él, ya que observamos su sufrimiento y sus deseos de ser una persona distinta.
El despertar nos trae una sorpresa a todos, y es que Hyeong-seok despierta en un nuevo y atractivo cuerpo. Aquí podemos jugar con las distintas perspectivas del hecho, puesto que podríamos llamar a su nuevo cuerpo: la imagen de su ser interior, o quizás la recompensa de un deseo superior. Sin embargo, también podemos ver la dualidad del personaje, en dónde podría caer en las presiones sociales y la vanidad al obtener una oportunidad de tal magnitud. Seamos sinceros, es probablemente lo que cualquier adolescente haría.
Pero es aquí donde inicia la construcción de Hyeong-seok; cuando llega a su nueva escuela no comienza a aparentar alguien que no es, sino a ser mejor y proteger a quienes tienen una vida parecida a su realidad. Lo más interesante de esta dinámica es que ambos cuerpos permanecen en co-existencia, y el protagonista mantiene ambas vidas paralelamente, mientras estudia con su nuevo cuerpo y trabaja con su verdadero yo.
A pesar de que tenemos ocho capítulos, no se habla en ningún momento el cómo es posible tal situación. Pero sí tenemos la oportunidad de ver desarrollo de otros personajes que avanzan junto a Hyeong-seok, lo que hace del anime mucho más interesante de ver.
Las situaciones sociales, el estatus económico, político, la fama, las escalas de popularidad, el bullying, el acoso, la amistad, pandillas, la búsqueda de la aceptación y el amor propio son temas fundamentales en la historia. Así que es definitivamente una apuesta muy interesante, sin duda su manwha debe ser mucho mejor.
Production and setting
The style of Korean anime has been respected, despite being a Japanese production. It has that particular style in the design of their faces that makes them look more softened, compared to Japanese characters. It's not my favorite style, but it's appreciated that they have something of their own, especially within the Japanese market.
Also, an additional plus that I loved, is that you can see the work of setting designs with more care. The streets, the food stalls, the trees, the schools, everything looks quite typical of Korea and very well exposed. It lives up to the manwha designs.
One point to note, and denoted mostly in a couple of scenes - which seem to be of great impact within the story - the animation is in 3D. Right in Vasco and Hyeong-seok's fight, and in the final singing scene at the festival. They give the moments a certain boom, creating surprise in the viewer. I liked that detail of playing with the types of animation.

Tiene ese estilo particular en el diseño de sus rostros que les hace ver más suavizados, en comparación con los personajes japoneses. No es mi estilo preferido, pero se aprecia que tengan algo propio, sobretodo dentro del mercado japonés.
Además, un plus adicional que me ha encantado, es que se ve el trabajo de diseños de ambientación con mayor cuidado. Las calles, los puestos de comida, los árboles, las escuelas, todo se ve bastante propio de corea y muy bien expuestas. Les hace honor a los diseños del manwha.
Un punto a destacar, y denota más que todo en un par de escenas —que parecen ser de gran impacto dentro de la historia—, la animación es en 3D. Justo en la pelea de Vasco y Hyeong-seok, y en la escena final de canto en el festival. Le dan cierto auge a los momentos, creando sorpresa en el televidente. Me gustó ese detalle de jugar con los tipos de animación.
Characters and design
The characters are very interesting, and we have a variety of them. Better yet, each one has a story behind them that gives intensity to their reason for being. I think the strength of this point is entirely thanks to Teajun Park, the creator of the manwha, who tends to think through his stories well and create characters with a purpose. I learned this from his other manwha, Hit Viral.
Hyeong-seok is the main one, with his two bodies. But characters like Vasco, Jae-yeol and Jin-seong who although we didn't see much of them, are extremely interesting. Additionally, the bond of friendship between Hyeong-seok, Deok-hwa and Jiho plus seeing how good influence is possible makes the character building a mainstay.
Whereas, as for the designs, as I commented previously, these are a bit softer. I mean they have this particular beauty, they're attractive, but in a well-groomed way, I think it has to do a lot with the culture of Korea. Personally, Vasco stole my breath, but there are many attractive designs, denoting excellent work.

Me refiero a que tienen esta belleza particular, son atractivos, pero de una forma bien cuidada, creo que tiene que ver mucho con la cultura de Corea. En lo personal, Vasco me robó el aliento, pero hay muchos diseños atractivos, denotando un excelente trabajo.
Music
The opening “Like That” by Ateez is jovial, very current and moving, creating an attractive start for the work. It's catchy and enveloping, you can't expect anything less from a well-known k-pop band. While the counterpart, the ending “Here Together” is softer and has a rather calm slice of life vibe. However, its ending melody in the last episode is more emotional, very emotional and gives an excellent season finale.
It is worth mentioning the work that was done in this anime for the soundtrack, in its last chapter is where we can appreciate more this fact, with the music festival, where two themes are presented: the music students, and Hyeong-seok and Deok-hwa, which bristles the skin for its deep lyrics and great production.
If this is a mainstay of the story, I'm even more sure that I won't miss its next seasons.

Si esto es un pilar de la historia, estoy aún más segura que no me perderé sus próximas temporadas.
My opinion
I really took a liking to him halfway through the story, since I had a hard time having any affection for the main character. His attitude is what makes me question him constantly, but the side stories softened the character for me.
It's a great way to expose Korea's problems, especially its superficiality in judging by physical appearance. It's obvious that this is not a fictional story, no matter how much fantasy it has. It is the desire to expose that society is rotten that makes this anime more interesting.
I want to know the direction of Hyeong-seok, since I didn’t really expect his story to go into the musical realm, as I imagined more fighting things. However, it was quite pleasant, and the festival was very emotional. His last chapter ended with my heart, so I had to bring him content about it. I hope you will be given the opportunity to see —and learn that not everything has to revolve around—: Appearances.
