The Elder Tree
In my mother's house it is very common to find a wide variety of plants, both ornamental and medicinal, since she has always had a great attachment to nature and the benefits it offers us, which is why I want to tell you a little about a tree that came to this home when it was just a sapling and that is now a large plant that draws a lot of attention from everyone who passes by the front of the house, it is an elder tree, which for us has been a true blessing.
The Sauco is a plant that has many benefits both in the field of health and in the kitchen, therefore there is no waste, my mother is very jealous of this plant and does not allow anyone to mistreat it or touch it without her consent, she gives it mainly a medicinal use since she assures that it is very effective to control cough, cold and fever, she mainly uses the flowers, leaving them to dry in a dark and cool place and then preparing infusions that should be taken hot and with little sugar.
I have also investigated on my own about other benefits of this plant and the truth is that I am surprised by the diversity of uses that can be given to it, for example in the medicinal field it serves to strengthen the immune system, to relieve muscle pain, to treat fluid retention and urinary infections, in addition the sewn berries (raw can be poisonous) are also effective for the treatment of various types of rheumatism. In the kitchen, the flowers have an interesting sweet flavor that can be used perfectly in any salad, with them we can also make refreshing infusions in order to quench thirst or accompany some foods, in this area the berries are also an excellent option for making syrups and jams.
The leaves of the elder can be used to make preparations that serve to combat different types of pests in crops, they also have a medicinal use but only externally, where they contribute positively to the relief of sprains, blows and in the wound healing. The stem of this plant can also be used in the production of kitchen utensils and agricultural tools, it is also an excellent option when looking to make musical instruments such as the flute.
In general, my mother has a plant in her small garden that is a true treasure, she is very aware of its value and for that reason she has taken care of it for years with such care and dedication, I have realized that it already exists on one side another small elder tree that little by little is growing and that in the future will be just as big. Everyone in my family has been cured on several occasions of various conditions with those white flowers that bloom in this tropical country almost every month of the year, which is why we are all responsible for the care and surveillance of this plant. It is also great to know that nature with its simplicity gives us so many benefits and blessings, which in the bosom of a humble family constitutes a great support in times of difficulty.

El Árbol de Sauco
En la casa de mi madre es muy común encontrar una gran variedad de plantas, tanto ornamentales como medicinales, ya que desde siempre ella ha tenido un gran apego por la naturaleza y por las bondades que nos ofrece, es por ello que les quiero comentar un poco sobre un árbol que llego a este hogar cuando apenas era un retoño y que ahora es una planta de gran tamaño que llama mucho la atención de todo el pasa por el frente de la casa, se trata de un árbol de sauco, el cual para nosotros ha sido una verdadera bendición.
El Sauco es una planta que cuenta con muchos beneficios tanto en el ámbito de la salud como en la cocina, por lo tanto no tiene desperdicio alguno, mi madre es muy celosa con esta planta y no permite que nadie la maltrate ni la toque sin su consentimiento, ella le da principalmente un uso medicinal ya que asegura que es muy eficaz para controlar la tos, el resfriado y la fiebre, usa principalmente las flores dejándolas secar en un lugar oscuro y fresco para luego preparar infusiones que se deben tomar calientes y con poca azúcar.
Además he investigado por mi cuenta sobre otros beneficios de esta planta y la verdad es que me deja sorprendido la diversidad de usos que se le pueden dar, por ejemplo en el ámbito medicinal sirve para fortalecer el sistema inmunitario, para el alivio del dolor muscular, para tratar las retenciones de líquidos y las infecciones urinarias, además las bayas cosidas (crudas pueden ser venenosas) también son eficaces para el tratamiento de diversos tipos de reumatismos. En la cocina las flores cuentan con un interesante sabor dulce que puede ser usado perfectamente en cualquier ensalada, con ellas también podemos realizar infusiones refrescantes con la finalidad de aplacar la sed o acompañar algunos alimentos, en esta área las bayas también son una excelente opción para la elaboración de jarabes y mermeladas.
Las hojas del sauco pueden ser usadas para realizar preparados que sirvan para combatir distintos tipos de plagas en los cultivos, también cuentan con un uso medicinal pero solamente de forma externa, en donde contribuyen e forma positiva en el alivio de esguinces, golpes y en la cicatrización de heridas. El tallo de esta planta también puede ser aprovechado en la elaboración de utensilios de cocina y herramientas agrícolas, además también es una excelente opción cuando se busca hacer instrumentos musicales como la flauta.
En reglas generales mi mama tiene en su pequeño jardín una planta que es un verdadero tesoro, ella está muy consciente de su valor y por esa razón la ha cuidado durante años con tanto esmero y dedicación, me he dado cuenta que ya de un lado existe otro pequeño árbol de sauco que poco a poco va creciendo y que en un futuro será igual de grande. Todos en mi familia hemos sido curados en diversas oportunidades de diversas afecciones con esas flores blancas que en este país tropical brotan en casi todos los meses del año, es por ello que todos somos responsables en el cuidado y vigilancia de esta planta. Además es genial saber que la naturaleza con su sencillez nos regala tantas bondades y bendiciones, que en el seno de una familia humilde constituye un gran apoyo en los momentos de dificultad.
