This is something I've been fantasizing about...to make photographs of the larvae and also adults of the same species.
Then their eggs too and document where they are laid, when, where they chill,what they eat, where they pupate, when...when they hatch.......you get the picture.
And Saurita Cassandra is an exquisitely frustrating and so all the more exciting creature...not only for it's beauty.
Surely not the tops at researching online...I challenge you to find out what it is that was burning in the sole of my foot this morning when, momentarily distracted from observing where my footfalls would fall....
It was much less painful than the time when a similar but much larger caterpillar who I know only by the moniker "gusano venenoso," or "poison-worm," fell somehow into my shirt while gardening and the long pieces of his furs were visible under the skin of the entire front of my torso essentially...
I suppose really it was better that, at the time I was unaware that his is some kind of unidentified toxin or toxin-cocktail...and therefore how do you really treat it properly??? I was under the impression that all of them contained methanoic acid, like fire-ants and that just like nettles, it goes away within minutes if I simply stay calm and unperturbed by it. Can you harvest nettles by hand? They're delicious and nutritious.
The caterpillar survived just fine, don't worry, and the stinging felt less than nettles and dissipated quickly via the super-medicine of ignoring it so as to not dump adrenaline into my bloodstream in addition to whatever inflammation causing toxin is contained within the urticating hairs that broke off into my foot flesh. No urticaria. I'm beginning to regain mastery of this body and mind. hahahahaha
And if you let them crawl up on you, you do not get "stung" by the little hairs, See?
And a not quick, but really freakin' digging through english, spanish and mostly the little information available is in Portugese books online- kind of websearch, revealed nothing at all about what that toxin is. Searching did however contribute a few valuable outcomes: distraction from the pain, learning that the larvae have been known to eat the leaves of avocado trees, and also a sufficient distraction from the morning mental static leftover dregs of yesterday's muck-moments which had previously been sitting like a lump in my solar plexus...

AND the search led me to some really neat documents about moth and butterfly species like Lonomia Obliqua, whose larvae have a similar defensive structure on their bodies which is potentially fatal.

Seguro que no estoy la mejore investigadora en internet... Te reto a ti, a que averigües qué es lo que me quemaba en la suela de la pata esta mañana cuando, momentáneamente distraído de observar dónde caían mis pisadas...Fue mucho menos doloroso que la vez que una oruga similar pero mucho más grande a la que sólo conozco por el apodo de "gusano venenoso", cayó de alguna manera en mi camisa mientras hacía jardinería y los largos trozos de sus pieles eran visibles bajo la piel de toda la parte delantera de mi torso esencialmente....
Supongo que en realidad era mejor que, en ese momento yo no era consciente de que la suya es una especie de toxina no identificada o toxina-cóctel ... y por lo tanto, ¿cómo realmente tratarlo adecuadamente? Yo tenía la impresión de que todas ellas contenían ácido metanoico, como las hormigas rojas, y que al igual que las ortigas, desaparece en cuestión de minutos si simplemente permanezco tranquila e imperturbable ante ellas. ¿Se pueden cosechar ortigas a mano? Estan muy ricas y nutritivas.
Sobrevivió sin problemas, no te preocupes, y el picazón se sintió menos que las ortigas y se disipó rápidamente a través de la super-medicina de ignorarlo para no descargar adrenalina en mi torrente sanguíneo además de cualquier toxina causante de inflamación contenida dentro de los pelos urticantes que se rompieron en la carne de mi pata. No hay urticaria. Estoy empezando a recuperar el dominio de este cuerpo y mente. jajajaja
Y un no rápido, pero realmente freakin 'cavar a través de inglés, español y sobre todo la poca información disponible se encuentra en portugués libros en línea -tipo de búsqueda en la web, no reveló nada en absoluto acerca de lo que la toxina es. La búsqueda, sin embargo, contribuyó a algunos resultados valiosos: la distracción del dolor, el aprendizaje de que las larvas se han sabido para comer las hojas de los árboles de aguacate, y también una distracción suficiente de la estática mental de la mañana restos de los momentos de ayer muck-slinging-loca que había sido previamente sentado como un bulto en mi plexo solar. ..aunque temporal...
Y me llevó a algunos documentos realmente interesantes sobre especies de polillas y mariposas como Lonomia Obliua, cuyas larvas tienen una estructura defensiva similar en sus cuerpos que es potencialmente fatal.
