Beaches are like a minefield of beauty and nature and apart from providing us with the beautiful sunsets and sunrises or the activities like surfing , swimming or just relaxing on the beaches. Have you ever wondered or taken notice of all those beautiful unusual and colorful seashells that get washed ashore and how they come to be what they are.
I was taking a walk along the coastline of Byron Bay beach on the weekend and to make this afternoon walk a bit more interesting , i decide to go on a mission to try and spot the most unusual seashells that have been washed ashore and , i was actually enjoying this mission , i never use to take must notice of the smaller seashells unless it was some huge shell that stood and appealed to me so , i started looking closer to beach sand looking closer at the smaller seashells and it was getting quite interesting and educational.
I was starting to see how these seashells were so wonderful in there shapes , textures and line formations , i learned that the longer the line formations are on a seashell the older they are.
Like this seashell it's 3 years old measured upon the length of the lines on the shell.
Now how does a seashell come to be well it all starts from a Mollusca which live in the oceans they are the second largest phylum of invertebrates living in oceans around the world with a known species of over 85,000 thousand that been recognized but of course there are many more that are yet to be recognized.
These Mollusks in the sea absorb salt and chemicals through there tissues and with the help of calcium in there bodies they begin to form a harden shell around there bodies for protection , thus creating the hard shellbodies and then when these Mollusks die off the shellbody drops into the ocean and eventually they are washed up on shore.
Depending on the species of the Mollusks they say it can take from one to six years to develop and reach the full size seashell.
Their are a couple of known myths about seashells if you happen to take some wonderful seashells home that you have taken a liking to they say by placing them on a window sill it will attract much good energy in the house and if you place them in a small basket it will bring much needed luck in your life how interesting , i much re-position my collection of seashells then.
Not really sure but , i do think these are a couple of pieces of coral that have been washed up on shore.
Thought I would show you a couple more weird things of nature I run into I thought these were a Cactus plant washed up on shore but they turn out to be a Rock Sea Urchin , honestly they do play of looking like a Cactus plant spiky and all.
A one species of jellyfish they call this one the nickname of the Blob 😄
Well I hope you enjoyed the walk along Byron Bay coastline with me and learned a bit more about seashells I did and hope you did. Thank you for joining me on my walk he's Kohsamui99 singing of see you all on my next walk.
