Fisherman's catch in Simeulue

Hello, Hivers Happy weekend and hope you are all well. In this post, I would like to share some documentation about fishermen's catch on Simeulue Island

Here in Simeulue, most of the fishermen still catch fish using traditional gear such as hand lines and spear guns. The catch usually consists of reef fish, cephalopod, and some elasmobranch. As in this picture, there is a pile of fish that consists of grouper, trevally, snapper, and sweetlips. All of the fish were high economically fish and the most pricey between them (on this picture) are the Yellow-edged lyretail grouper. "IMG_1246.JPG"

In the second image, there were a lot of parrotfish in the fish pile. These fish were not high economically fish but very easy to catch. Parrotfish themselves were categorized as herbivore fish which could be used as an indicator of reef health. They eat algae that are the major competitor of coral. Their existence were important to inhibit algae growth, and so they don't overpopulate the coral. Unfortunately, the fishermen were not aware and well-educated about it and this condition could lead to depletion of the parrotfish stock which also would give a bad impact on the coral reef ecosystem.

Next are octopuses, these cephalopods are another favorite catch. It's still easy to catch and the price is even more expensive than the Yellow-edged lyretail grouper. On a day trip, the fishermen could get up to 20Kg. They catch these creatures using spear guns but some others using hand line which the bait has been modified using a ball and attached with some spoons to make it look like an octopus too (Sorry I don't have the image but I'll add it later soon after I get it)

I think it's enough for the explanation, I'll add some other pictures for the rest of this post. Hope you all enjoy it.

Fishing is the main source of livelihood here in Simeulue as the Island is located quite far from the mainland (the fastest route took 8 hours using a ferry). not only from it's reef fish resources, this Island is also known as a good place to surfing (I'll make another thread about this).
