The versatility of the Desert Rose

Para los que ya estamos familiarizados con el cultivo de esta bella y escultural planta, a menudo tenemos que aliviar las muchas inseguridades que los nuevos adeptos a este cultivo enfrentan al momento de manejar sus pequeños tesoros.

For those of us already familiar with growing this beautiful and statuesque plant, we often have to alleviate many of the insecurities that new cultivators face when handling its little treasures.

Es razonable que, ante tanta información circulada en internet por expertos sobre el tema Adenium (Rosa del Desierto), de sus cuidados, reproducción y poda para poder obtener un ejemplar digno de campeonato, los iniciados en esta pasión se dejan llevar por un sin fin de recomendaciones olvidando detalles que para mí son esenciales al respecto: la “climatización” y “adaptación” de las especies ante nuevas circunstancias de vida.

It is reasonable that, given so much information circulated on the internet by experts on the subject of Adenium (Desert Rose), its care, reproduction and pruning in order to obtain a specimen worthy of a championship, those initiated into this passion are carried away by endless of recommendations forgetting details that for me are essential in this regard: the "air conditioning" and "adaptation" of the species to new life circumstances.

Yo no fui la excepción y, al iniciarme en el cultivo del Adenium, mis primeras acciones fueron buscar todo tipo de información experta que me permitiera mantener con vida mis primeros ejemplares. Tras mucho tiempo, me detuve a razonar en el hecho de que el 90% de toda la información que recopilé y puse en práctica, provenía de expertos de países cuyas condiciones climáticas no son equiparables a las de Venezuela, en términos generales. La variación en parámetros como temperatura (alta y baja), humedad relativa y precipitaciones entre los países con 4 estaciones, en contraste con las 2 nuestras, hace una gran diferencia al momento de poner en prácticas dichos consejos.

I was no exception and, when I started in the cultivation of Adenium, my first actions were to look for all kinds of expert information that would allow me to keep my first specimens alive. After a long time, I stopped to reason about the fact that 90% of all the information that I collected and put into practice came from experts from countries whose climatic conditions are not comparable to those of Venezuela, in general terms. The variation in parameters such as temperature (high and low), relative humidity and rainfall between countries with 4 seasons, in contrast to ours, makes a big difference when putting these tips into practice.

Tras guiarme por bastante tiempo de todos esos consejos que me llevaron a un sinfín de ensayos y errores, mi experiencia en el tema me ha permitido concluir que: una vez que obtenemos una planta (de cualquier clase) y la llevamos a nuestro habitad, iniciamos un proceso de climatización para esta, originando a su vez, por instinto de “supervivencia”, un proceso de adaptación de la planta a sus nuevas condiciones o habitad.

After guiding me for a long time from all those tips that led me to endless trials and errors, my experience on the subject has allowed me to conclude that: once we obtain a plant (of any kind) and take it to our habitat, we start a process of air conditioning for this, originating in turn, by instinct of "survival", a process of adaptation of the plant to its new conditions or habitat.

Hablando de mis Adenium, he podido observar que esta planta recibe con bastante tolerancia un riego diario (no excesivo), lo que contradice la indicación general de riego espaciado de 3 a 5 días. Con respecto a la iluminación, 5 horas de luz solar directa ha resultado ser para mis plantas la proporción equilibrada de energía solar, sobre todo en tiempo de floración, ya que las flores (más los tonos oscuros) se tornaron bastantes susceptibles a la incidencia excesiva de la luz solar, provocando que se marchiten prematuramente o que no se desarrollen totalmente sus capullos.

Speaking of my Adeniums, I have been able to observe that this plant receives with enough tolerance a daily watering (not excessive), which contradicts the general indication of watering spaced from 3 to 5 days. Regarding lighting, 5 hours of direct sunlight has turned out to be the balanced proportion of solar energy for my plants, especially during flowering time, since the flowers (plus the dark tones) became quite susceptible to excessive incidence from sunlight, causing them to prematurely wilt or not fully develop their cocoons.

También debo agregar que, en materia de injertos y polinización, no existen técnicas definitivas, ya que estas prácticas van de la mano con el ingenio y capacidad de creatividad del jardinero, quien dejandose llevar por su imaginación se anima a intentar nuevos procedimientos que le permitan llegar al ejemplar deseado.

I must also add that, in terms of grafting and pollination, there are no definitive techniques, since these practices go hand in hand with the ingenuity and creativity of the gardener, who, allowing himself to be carried away by his imagination, is encouraged to try new procedures that allow him reach the desired copy.

En las proximas 2 fotos podrán observar que me arriesgué a injertar un esqueje completo (rama), a diferencia del fragmento de donante que por lo general se usa. Y resultó muy satisfactorio, ya que la rama continuó su proceso de crecimiento y floración normalmente (luego de su proceso de adaptación).

In the next 2 photos you can see that I took the risk of grafting a complete cutting (branch), unlike the donor fragment that is usually used. And it was very satisfactory, since the branch continued its growth and flowering process normally (after its adaptation process).

Esta práctica me es particularmente efectiva cuando quiero acelerar los tiempos de espera en ver resultados de floración multiple en un especimen.

This practice is particularly effective for me when I want to speed up the wait times in seeing multiple flowering results in a specimen.

Me he animado a hibridar esta versatil planta con otras especies, obteniendo como un resultado un híbrido de peculiar fenotipo: tallo rojiso y hojas de color blanco amarillento (tal como se muestra en las fotos y el video anexo.

I have encouraged to hybridize this versatile plant with other species, obtaining as a result a hybrid with a peculiar phenotype: reddish stem and yellowish-white leaves (as shown in the photos and the attached video).

Este hibrido es visiblemente diferente en fenotipo al adenium tradicional. Más, sus nuevas características no podré apreciarlas, sino hasta que alcance maduréz y floración. Espero con mucha esperanza haber podido crear un híbrido que pueda aportar aroma a la Flor del Decierto (ese es mi objetivo).

This hybrid is visibly different in phenotype from the traditional adenium. Moreover, its new characteristics I will not be able to appreciate, until it reaches maturity and flowering. I hope with great hope that I have been able to create a hybrid that can add aroma to the Flor del Decierto (that is my goal).

En mi experiencia, al respecto de qué es bueno o malo, mucho o poco, con respecto a los cuidados de esta exótica planta, quisiera significar que “todo depende de las condiciones del habitad donde se desarrolla esta”, por lo que la receta más idónea para su cuidado es la "observación atenta" de cómo va reaccionando a las condiciones pre existentes e ir introduciendo los cambios necesarios, hasta lograr un desarrollo equilibrado que permita disfrutar de un ejemplar sano y llamativo.

In my experience, regarding what is good or bad, a lot or a little, with respect to the care of this exotic plant, I would like to mean that “everything depends on the conditions of the habitat where it develops”, so the recipe more ideal for its care is the "careful observation" of how it reacts to the pre-existing conditions and gradually introduces the necessary changes, until a balanced development is achieved that allows the enjoyment of a healthy and striking specimen.

Con todo respeto, quisiera significar el hecho de que, si bien es cierto de que cada jardinero adquiere y genera de su experiencia individual un valioso conocimiento; no siempre esa experiencia puede ser aplicable a cualquier caso o establecer con ella reglas. Considero que en la naturaleza todo es impredecible y la vida se abre caminos en las formas más sorprendentes e inexplicables al entendimiento humano; y si podemos ayudar a ese proceso con un poco de imaginación, lo transformamos en un "arte".

With all due respect, I would like to point out the fact that, while it is true that each gardener acquires and generates valuable knowledge from his individual experience; this experience may not always be applicable to any case or establish rules with it. I believe that in nature everything is unpredictable and life makes its way in the most surprising and inexplicable ways to human understanding; and if we can help that process with a little imagination, we transform it into an "art".
