A Change in Our View - Cutting Down Potentially Dangerous Trees

Our view changed yesterday. Three of the largest trees on our property were cut down due to danger of them falling on one of our rental homes. They were huge, so it was a big event for our family to go out and watch them.

We hired some guys to assess the situation and take care of the trees. These trees are palo santo trees, and they are very "friendly" toward ficus trees. The ficus will enter the center of the tree and kill it from the middle.

The tree will then weaken and be blown over in the wind. They also have weak roots, so too much rain plus a little wind can knock over these huge trees.

A few years ago one of these trees fell during one such storm. It fell onto the corner of the house, and thankfully it didn't cause too much damage.

We had multiple people tell us that these trees were already weakened and in danger of falling on one of the homes, so it was time to get them taken down. We were sad to see them go!

The process of getting the tree tied up with a cable to the wench on the truck was interesting. They used a slingshot to launch a string with a nut on it up into the tree and then attached a rope to it. Then they attached the cable to the rope and tied it all off.

They started sawing and began pulling when the tree started moving. The tree fell at exactly the spot the guy said it would.

After all was said and done, they said these were the largest trees of this type they had ever seen. Normally they get about 10 feet tall, but these were enormous. They said they were surprised they hadn't fallen before and they were dangerous.

We are thankful that everyone was safe, and, although it was an interesting morning, we will miss these trees, but we are thankful that they did not fall on another house.
