WTF Do I Know About Cumbia

img_8019.jpeg

Creating a Cumbia album seems like a fun idea. I like the music, I like the pulse, I like to make music for people to dance with. I’m not gonna lie, my knowledge of Cumbia and my knowledge with trucks is less than amateur. I would be wise to consult our HIVE neighbor @splatts! Now that I think of it, I need to name a song after his awesome DIY series about replacing his trucks bearings. Check out his series here: @splatts/2001-ford-excursion-front-axle-rebuild--part-3-front-axle-u-joint-replacement

Lol, he said, “joint replacement.”
I like joints.

The new album, “Cumbia Truck”, will contain five to eight songs. The image below reveals a few of my favorites.

Creating a weird Cumbia album seems easy. Weird is easy, right? Art is... JUST KIDDING!!! I'm not gonna get into the art debate. Weird is just the way this music will probably sound in the end. It’s going to be weird. The instrumentation is unorthodox. It's going to be weird, but hopefully almost danceable.

Instruments make it go.

Let's talk about the various instruments I used. I never talk about the instruments enough. Same ol tricks?!? Yup, live tenor pan recorded, live Double Barrel Bass Pans recorded, TheBrokenYellowGuitar is always recorded live and acoustically because it's bro... uh, wait!

STOP RUNNING AWAY!
STOP SCROLLING!!!
WAIT!!!
INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM without SINGING!!!
NO SINGING on "Cumbia Truck."
Maybe some "oh-ah", but not much...
I say "oh shit" in one of the songs... don't run.

LOOK shinny stuff.

As usual, these are some of the real instruments I’m using. Hand percussion helps keep all the fake percussion warm. The fake percussion helps me fake like I know what I'm doing.

Music is fun.

Don't tell TheBrokenYellowGuitar that I shared a baby bathtub picture on the internet. So dirty, so broken, so yellow. Like pee.

I tried to make GIF here, but...

Meh, it's a weak GIF anyway.
LOOK a video game!

Music software DAW is like a puzzle game where the only rules are "don't suck."

Lots of software Cheese instruments, software Japanese instruments, software Latin percussion, #TheBrokenYellowGuitar, electric bass, fender Rhodes, Hammond organ, and more.

Despite all my rage I’m still just a rat in a cage.

I wish I could do this all day in a quiet cottage in the desert. Nope, can’t, it’s not real. It’s just a reset. Be flowing and make this music anywhere. To use my time more efficiently, I’m taking notes while I listen and review.

img_8016.jpeg

It’s a good idea to create time for listening and organizing. At the end of the day, when your session is over, make sure you export/bounce down/render a copy of your days work. Have something to listen to while you cope with the rest of life. 😬

A Few Song Details

This little section is about how and why some of the songs sound the way they do. Experimenting with different creative approaches and creative mindsets can be part of the fun. How much fun can you have inside of a little box if you create the little box?

img_8020.heic

I’m currently rehearsing with big band and preparing for a concert. One of the songs we are performing is the famous my Cherie amour by Stevie Wonder. I stole four of the cord changes to make one of the songs on this new album.

img_8031.jpeg

The chicken scratch on the envelope above is the show a set of eight measures. Each board gets two measures. The slash chords are fun.

We can see the original chord changes in the sheet music below.

Another source of inspiration came from a theoretical song arrangement. I started out by writing the arrangement down on this piece of paper.

img_8029.jpg

This is to serve as a general outline for creating the song. My intention was to share it with friends. I also shared the arrangement in a HIVE post using DBuzz: https://d.buzz/#/@steemseph/c/gljdxg2195c5tpbel0uj77

img_8033.png

Writing down a macro type arrangement or general outline allows one to predict easier and express themselves creatively within an imaginable parameter. It’s like creating a padded room for someone to go bonkers inside of… musically.

DILO BITCHES!
A few of the other songs should sound like my weird interpretation of Perez Pardo’s music and orchestrations.

Quirky organ sounds, long grooves for dancing, and percussion breaks from 1976 what are things I try to re-interpret now in some of the other songs.

img_8058.png

The song with the same name as the album title, “Cumbia Truck,” contains multiple solos by a friend and by a Guzheng.
I created the Guzheng solos. One note solo much?

img_8062.jpeg

Another fun thing I’ve started doing because of this musical journey!

img_8063.png

WOOD BLOCK SOLOS!!!
Who does that??!
I do. I like-’em!

Ecency has a text field bug and I am now editing this post from my desktop comp. Maybe it's a text limit. Maybe I need a text limit. Maybe it's time to end this post.

Thanks for reading and supporting. Feel free to leave a comment or question. Real people are allowed to say simple things. No text wall or uber statements required. Ask about music. Ignore my text wall reply. All good.
