Wuppertal Schwebebahn

The Wuppertal Schwebebahn is the world’s oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars. Designed by Eugen Langen and opened in 1901, it was originally intended to be sold to Berlin but was ultimately constructed in Wuppertal, a small industrial town in western #Germany.

The railway runs for about 13.3 kilometers along the Wupper River, suspended up to 12 meters above the ground. Its distinctive hanging cars travel silently above the city, offering a unique view of #Wuppertal below. The Schwebebahn still operates today, serving as a vital part of public transport, moving around 25 million passengers annually. 📸: @pangea #architectanddesign
