La principal sombra de este parque radica en su propio nombre, pues aunque hay un letrero que lo identifica, si se lo preguntáramos a las personas que encontremos en la calle, el mayor porcentaje dirá que es el Parque Colón, debido a que en su extensión abarca dos cuadras de la calle que tiene ese nombre.
Solo algunas personas que conocen su origen o tienen un mayor nivel de información lo llamarán por su propio nombre: parque Antonio Maceo. Pues aunque solo es cortado en el centro por la intersección con la calle Maceo, su nombre se debe a que fue bautizado así por sus fundadores.
Pese a los ingentes esfuerzos realizados, tanto por la Universidad “Hermanos Saiz montes de Oca”, así como por otras instituciones y organismos, si usted llega a esta ciudad y pregunta por el Parque Maceo, es poco probable que, aun estando muy cerca del mismo, alguien pueda orientarle.
Confieso que fue en el año 2005, cuando comencé a impartir clases en el Departamento de Estudios Socioculturales de la Universidad de Pinar del Río, que supe el verdadero nombre de dicho parque, y fue precisamente en un Trabajo de Diploma presentado por un estudiante, en el cual proponía una estrategia para dar solución a dicha problemática.
De todas formas, tal incertidumbre no demerita la grandilocuencia del mismo: las hileras de bancos se extienden en ambos laterales, cobijados por frondosos árboles, por lo que a cualquier hora del día se pueden ocupar.
En el centro las plantas ornamentales, entre las cuales se encuentran una especie de palmitas centenarias, que completan el majestuoso paisaje urbano con sus anchurosos pasillos que invitan al paseo.
Aunque el parque constituye un espacio abierto, no siempre fue así. Ahí encontramos otra sombra, es otro aspecto poco conocido: durante la neocolonia las dos secciones que lo conforman estaban divididas no solo por la intersección de la calle, sino también por el color de la piel de las personas que lo frecuentaban.
A la cuadra que le correspondía a las personas de piel negra podían acceder las personas de piel blanca, aunque había prejuicios que lo impedían. Hace poco tiempo escuché a una señora muy mayor, de piel blanca, decir que cuando era jovencita su familia le impuso un fuerte castigo por haber pasado por la parte correspondiente a los de piel negra.
Sin embargo, a estos últimos les estaba prohibido pasar por la otra parte del parque porque era exclusiva para blancos. Realmente es una parte de la historia del parque que horroriza y en los momentos actuales parece increíble.
Como hemos visto, en este parque no solo existen las sombras de los a árboles, sino que hay otras sobre las cuales se impone la necesidad de seguir poniendo luz, pues el mismo constituye un aspecto importante en la historia de la Ciudad.

The main shadow of this park lies in its own name, because although there is a sign that identifies it, if we were to ask the people we meet in the street, most of them will say that it is Colón Park, because its extension covers two blocks of the street that has that name.

Although the park is an open space, it was not always so. There we find another shadow, another little known aspect: during the neocolony the two sections that make up the park were divided not only by the intersection of the street, but also by the color of the skin of the people who frequented it.
The block that corresponded to people with black skin could be accessed by people with white skin, although there were prejudices that prevented it. Not long ago I heard a very old white-skinned lady say that when she was a young girl, her family gave her a severe punishment for having passed through the black-skinned part of the park.
However, the latter were forbidden to pass through the other part of the park because it was exclusively for whites. It really is a horrifying part of the park's history, and at the present time it seems unbelievable.
As we have seen, in this park there are not only the shadows of the trees, but there are others on which it is necessary to continue to put light, because it is an important aspect in the history of the city.
