There is a widespread idea that sounds good, motivates, and is easily shared: you have to think big
The problem is that it has been repeated so much, and with so little nuance, that it has ended up causing more harm than good.
Thinking big doesn't prevent you from making mistakes.
It doesn't protect you from making bad decisions.
And, of course, it doesn't guarantee that the path you choose will be the right one.
I have seen many people with a huge vision make very small… but decisive mistakes. Basic mistakes. Mistakes of focus. Mistakes of choice. Not because they didn't dream enough, but because they confused thinking big with thinking better.
Thinking big expands
Thinking well organizes
And without organization, expansion usually ends in dispersion.
When "thinking big" becomes a mantra, it ceases to be a tool and becomes an excuse. An elegant way to avoid uncomfortable questions.
Questions like:
Does this make sense right now?
Does it fit with my real abilities?
Am I choosing from clarity or from ego?
Misunderstood greatness pushes you to accelerate processes that are not yet mature, to take on commitments that cannot be sustained, and to justify poor decisions with inspiring speeches.
And that is not ambition.
It is a lack of judgment.
